December 23, 16:53 GMT update: Hardware insider Hoang Anh Phu on X has confirmed that the GPU design belongs to the upcoming RDNA 4-based Radeon RX9070 XT, not the 8800 XT as previously speculated. Original article continues below.
AMD has confirmed that it will be launching its RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4 Radeon RX 8000 and 9000 series of GPUs early next year, at CES 2025 alongside the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 series we recently reported on. While these leaks have given us an idea of what to expect from AMD's next-generation GPUs, it appears as though they have been hiding in plain sight for quite some time.
As spotted by an eagle-eyed redditor on the r/AMD subreddit, AMD has seemingly featured an as-yet-unseen graphics card in an official Reddit advertisement for what appears to be a couple of months. The Reddit ad in question features the box of an AMD Ryzen 9 CPU next to a triple-fan AMD Radeon graphics card.
This design appears to be unique, not yet seen from AMD, and it appears to be a first-party design, bearing no branding from third-party AIB manufacturers anywhere on the shroud. All of these clues suggest that this is a new AMD RX 8000 series GPU design, although which exactly is unclear. The tri-fan design suggests it would be for a higher-end GPU, and it seems unlikely that AMD would pair its top-end Ryzen 9 CPU with a lower-end GPU in an ad, so this is likely the reference design for the upcoming Radeon RX 8800 XT, or whatever AMD decides to call it. In fairness, it could also be the newly leaked RDNA 4-based AMD Radeon RX 9070.
Thus far, all indications point to the RX 8000 series being based on AMD's RDNA 3.5 architecture, which looks to be a moderate refresh of the RDNA 3 architecture AMD used for the RX 7000 series GPUs. While this isn't necessarily bad news for budget-conscious gamers and mid-range GPU buyers, it means AMD will likely remain uncompetitive in the flagship GPU space.
