2nm SoC in ChatGPT-powered AI phone to beat iPhone 18 Pro’s A20 Pro, Galaxy S27 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in GPU

The 2026 Android versus iPhone flagship SoC race is underway, but soon we might have to add OpenAI’s first smartphone to the mix.
A fresh leak from a famous tipster has revealed some interesting details about MediaTek’s upcoming Dimensity 9600 flagship chip, which is expected to power OpenAI’s ChatGPT-focused smartphone, the Oppo Find X10 Pro series and the Vivo X500 series.
Designed to take on the Apple A20 Pro in the iPhone 18 Pro and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in the Galaxy S27 Ultra, the Dimensity 9600 will be fabricated on a 2nm node.
It seems MediaTek is doubling down on its signature architecture with a 2+3+3 all-big core CPU setup. This configuration aims for industry-leading single-core performance, specifically targeting the benchmarks set by Apple’s flagship A-series.
Android phones with 2nm Dimensity 9600 SoC might outperform Apple A20 Pro, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in GPU power; OpenAI phone to take advantage of MediaTek’s next-gen AI capabilities
While CPU gains are significant (says the leaked info), the GPU may be the Dimensity 9600's real superpower. In fact, it is now expected that the Dimensity 9600 might end up outperforming 2nm rivals by integrating:
- Native frame interpolation & upscaling: Hardware-level features to boost frame rates and resolution.
- Advanced ray-tracing: Improved efficiency for better mobile gaming.
- Next-gen AI boost: Enhanced Compute Matrix Engine (CME) and Scalable Matrix Extension (SME) capabilities - this might be the reason OpenAI is going with MediaTek
Once again, the first Dimensity 9600-powered phones are set to launch in the fall of 2026, setting up a direct head-to-head fight with the first wave of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 devices and the iPhone 18 Pro.
Meanwhile, the OpenAI phone is expected to launch in late 2026 or early 2027, potentially running a custom version of the Dimensity 9600.
