Smoke for Steam is a new app for the Apple Watch that lets users access some of the features of Steam on their wrists. Smoke allows users to look at their library, view achievements, check the status of their friends, and read news articles pertaining to titles they own. Otherwise, the app is limited; it doesn't even allow users to manage their game libraries or purchase new titles.

Smoke is a new app for the Apple Watch that brings Steam’s gaming platform to your wrist… sort of.

The app allows Apple Watch wearers to view some content available on the Steam platform. Users cannot play or purchase games through Smoke, but they can view the titles they own and their associated achievements and playtime. Smoke also shows store information for games (e.g., price, review scores, etc.) and the status of friends.

The main draw of Smoke is reading news articles from Steam. Smoke allows users to search for news stories related to the games they own and save them for later reading. To that end, the app looks fairly well-polished and should foot the bill.

However, that’s pretty much all that Smoke can do right now. Its feature set is limited. Obviously, it’s outrageous to think the Apple Watch could be used to play Steam titles, even over the cloud. But the inability to purchase games or manage a user’s Steam library feels like a missed opportunity. To its credit, Smoke is free, so there’s no harm in giving it a go.

What are your thoughts on Smoke for the Apple Watch? Does the app have the potential to fill a niche, or is it an over-engineered solution in search of a problem? Let us know in the comments.
