Top-end clamshell foldable smartphones that are not from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr lines are back - albeit possibly not until 2026, according to a new leak. One of them is thought to come from a leading Chinese OEM with a substantially updated design and cutting-edge, top-end silicon.

We are now just over half-way through the year, yet there is just 1 truly top-end clamshell foldable smartphone on the global market.

The $1,299.99 Motorola Razr Ultra is the only handset of its form-factor to pack Qualcomm's most powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset for mobile devices, and is also touted as the "most advanced flip" phone in other ways, such as charging speed and rear cameras.

Its successor might have more competition in 2026, however, as one of China's "top 5" companies is projected to get back into the market by then.

The next-gen Flip is thought to have a main display with a single punch-hole camera driven by the "SM8850", or Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 processor thought to power other, non-foldable next-gen Android flagships such as the OnePlus 15 and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Their alleged foldable counterpart's actual identity remains a mystery for now - although top candidates include successors for the Vivo X Flip or Oppo Find N3 Flip.

The new leak hints at a Pixel-style bar in order to make room for an enlarged cover display, much like that of Oppo's latest clamshell foldable patent (although the camera hump is in the opposite orientation).

Its cameras might also make the upgrade to a periscope telephoto lens: something typically not found in clamshells, although Oppo and Vivo have had experience with fitting those specs into more compact devices as of late.

Then again, Vivo is apparently unwilling to upgrade even its upcoming, full-sized X Fold5 to the 8 Elite, its allegedly improved design and durability notwithstanding.

Therefore, it might be slightly more likely that it is Oppo that will forge ahead and release a fully spec'd-out smartphone with the same design as a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip as part of its next product cycle.
