Last year, Oppo announced the Oppo Mag line of magnetic accessories for its smartphones, starting with the Find X8 series. However, unlike Apple's iPhone series which have MagSafe support, Oppo's smartphones with support for wireless charging require a case with built-in magnets to work with these accessories. Now, a new report says Oppo is developing true magnetic wireless charging which will not require magnetic cases.
The info comes from Digital Chat Station who posted on Weibo that Oppo is testing true magnetic wireless charging but with a different design that circumvents Apple's MagSafe patent. It is unknown if this circumvention will mean Oppo's devices won't be compatible with MagSafe accessories like the Anker 622 MagGo 5,000mAh power bank (curr. available on Amazon for $33.99).
In a comment under the original post, the source hints at phones having a slightly smaller battery capacity if they have true magnetic wireless charging than if they support regular wireless charging. For example, a phone with magnetic wireless charging could have a 6,800mAh battery capacity, or a larger 7,000mAh battery with standard wireless charging.
It is not yet known which Oppo phone will debut with true magnetic wireless charging, but one thing that is certain is that once it is available for Oppo smartphones, we can expect the feature to make it to OnePlus-branded smartphones since both brands have merged.
