The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500 (also called GMA 500) is a graphics cards for embedded products (e.g. MIDs), netbooks, and other small mobile devices. It is usually paired with an Intel Atom CPU (Intel Atom Z5xx series) and designed for video playback tasks (even HD content). The integrated video decoder is able to accelerate MPEG-2, VC-1, and AVC HD videos. The graphics core is based on a licensed PowerVR SGX core and is clocked with 100 (UL11L) or 200 MHz (US15L, US15W chipset). The GMA 500 is compatible with DirectX 10.1 and features 4 unified shaders.

Some of the netbooks using Intel’s GMA 500 are MSI Wind U115 Hybrid, Sony Vaio P, Fujitsu Lifebook U820, Dell Inspiron Mini 10, Dell Inspiron Mini 12, Asus Eee PC T91, and Acer Aspire One 751.

Intel has recently launched an update for the Intel GMA 500 driver (version 3.0.2.32X) which is believed to resolve many issues. The issues that have been resolved are stated in the release notes available alongside the driver download tab on Intel’s official download center. This new driver is believed to improve YouTube and other Flash videos that may play a little more smoothly. My personal suggestion is that users should definitely download this updated driver as it is always wise to keep your hardware drivers updated.
