Acer to focus on higher-margin CULV processors

Acer has decided to mould its sales strategy in such a way to focus more on higher-margin CULV-based notebooks, while reducing orders for some of its netbooks. Digitimes reports rightly that this is likely to affect shipments from Acer's ODM partners Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics in the second quarter. They are the partners currently for supplying the Acer Aspires. On top of that, weak demand in Europe has left a high inventory of Acer netbooks unsold, adding another reason for Acer to reduce its orders – as reported by Digitimes.

This decision came after the positive reviews the World’s second largest PC manufacturer got from its new Timeline series of notebooks, which are the first in the line to have the CULV processors from Intel. Capable of giving eight hours of battery life, the aspire Timeline series includes three models - a 13.3 inch £3.5 ($699) edition, a 14 inch £4.2 unit and the larger 15.6 inch £5.3 ($899) unit.  It is to compete the other significant ultraportable is in the market like and Dell Adamo and Apple Mac book air. Powered by an Intel Core2 Duo ultra low voltage processor SU9400 or  Intel Core2 Solo ultra low voltage processor SU3500 and Mobile Intel GS45 Express Chipset, the Aspire Timeline series is adorned by a Dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM support, Up to 4 GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory.

The reductions could start as early as June, with orders for some models falling more than 50%. So keep watching this space for more updates on what Acer’s up to.
