Interesting technology
Whenever we want to remove a pen drive, iPod, mobile phone, etc. from the USB drive of a computer, we first need to disconnect the device from the computer by clicking on the icon in the taskbar and stopping the device. Once the device has been stopped, it can then be safely removed from the computer. If a user fails to stop the device before removing it physically from the computer, it might result in corruption of data.
According to AppleInsider, Apple has just filed a patent for a technology that would enable the user to disconnect the external USB device just by touching the device. It seems as if there would be some sort of a sensor on the USB device that initiates a disengagement from host system when a user either touches the device or is in close proximity to the device (about to remove the device). This will help the user to protect the data which can otherwise get corrupted if a user abruptly removes the device. The patent covers USB devices, SD cards, mobile phones, media players, game consoles, computer peripherals, biometric sensors, headsets and more. Moreover, it can act as a biometric finger sensor which automatically locks the device if an unauthorized user grabs this device.
It would be really interesting to see such devices in action and we would just have to wait for it to arrive in the market.
