Intel showed off the new CPU at IDF

The Atom series of processors have been quite popular with the netbooks, especially the N270 and the N280. Most of the netbooks you see today are running these two processors, of which the N280 is touch faster than the N270 at 1.66GHz against a slower 1.6GHz clocking of the N270.

Now as the netbook market grows at a breathtaking pace, Intel was expected to come up with newer versions –and they will not disappoint. Intel is expected to unveil its new product roadmap as well as new technology innovations at the upcoming IDF to be held in San Francisco from September 22-24, according to Digitimes. It should include their latest ultra-thin notebook processors and the latest Atom N450. These probably won’t be the dual-core chips as being rumored earlier, but definitely lighter and smaller. Code-named “Pine trail”, these platforms will have a single-core Atom N450 CPU with built-in northbridge functions and should be paired with the new NM10 (Tiger Point) chipset.

The advantage of using the new architecture is that the Pine Trail can run faster thereby increasing processor performance and graphics performance. Moreover, the power requirements are further reduced to about 7W TDP meaning that the battery life would be increased. Intel also says that fanless systems could be built on the Pine Trail platform but at relative configuration tradeoffs.

Apart from this, The chip-making giant will also showcase the Calpella platform for notebooks and next-generation Moorestown platform for MID products, observes Digitimes, adding that Intel might show engineering sample Moorestown-based MIDs, as well as revealing more details of its Medfield platform for MID's in 2011.
