Whenever any company launches any sort of a communication device (a PC, Phone, MID, etc.) in the US, it has to be first approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC is charged with regulating all non-federal government use of the radio spectrum (including radio and television broadcasting, and all interstate telecommunications (wire, satellite, and cable) as well as all international communications that originate or terminate in the United States.

Usually whenever a product goes for approval to the FCC, the company manufacturing the product enters into a non-disclosure agreement with FCC vide which FCC is not allowed to publish any details about that particular product for a particular time period. But, sometimes, companies don’t keep any sort of non-disclosure agreement, that is exactly what Archos did when it sent the A5S (7501) and A5H (7502) internet tablet for approval.

According to earlier reports it was being pointed out that Archos was actually gearing up for the launch of an Android based 5-inch internet tablet as early as 15th September. Well, it seems as if the Archos A5S and Archos A5H which have been outed by FCC are those devices which will be powered by an Android operating system and a 5-inch display. These new devices look just like the 4.8-inch Archos 5 which we saw earlier. However, the speaker and the headphone jack have been re-positioned and a microSD slot has also been added. The pictures point out the presence of a micro USB but this is not confirmed.

The FCC tested 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and an FM transmitter and receiver on the A5S while a user manual briefly mentions 3G data, although the FCC didn't test it. The 3G data might be reserved for the higher end model which might be the Archos A5H. The rest of the specifications are still unknown but a previous report by Pocketables indicates the presence of a 5-inch 800x480 pixel display with accelerometer, OpenGL 3D graphics support, HDMI output, 500GB storage, 7-hours of battery backup, and a TI based OMAP3440 processor.
