Ionic batteries could increase battery life by upto 6 times

There have been lots of improvements in computer and hardware technology in the recent past. The area that I am going to focus on is the improvement in battery life in netbooks and notebooks. At present most of the electronics products are using lithium-ion technology based batteries but now a new product is ready to replace this lithium-ion technology. Recent Ionic battery projects funded by the US Department of Energy could increase the battery life of netbooks, notebooks, mobile devices, and other battery based electronics products to a new level beyond the limits as set by the lithium-ion batteries. These new batteries work on the principal of fluidic energy and according to Professor Cody Friesen at Arizona State a metal air battery which uses ionic liquid as its electrolyte is more powerful than the lithium-ion battery and also has a much longer life.

Also termed as Metal-Air Ionic Liquid, these batteries have superior energy storage capability as compared to zinc-air batteries because of the use of ionic liquid salt. These ionic batteries are so powerful that they can increase the runtime of an ordinary netbook six times i.e six-hour runtime of a netbook will become 36 hours in the future with the help of  Ionic batteries. This technology can put more energy in a battery without increasing the size and weight of the battery. Also according to researchers, in a packed mass of 1kg they can increase battery efficiency from 900 watt-hours to 1600 watt-hours which is near about 11 times the energy of lithium-ion battery.

Also, while using Ionic batteries, battery makers can use metals denser than zinc which will help in holding more charge in a given volume. These ionic liquids have electrochemical stability of up to 5 volts which can generate high capacity density of up to 1600 watt-hours per kilogram which is 11 times of what is provided by lithium-ion batteries.

The main challenges researchers are facing in this project is selecting an ionic liquid which can provide the required results at low cost. It is not clear how soon Metal-Air Ionic Liquid (MAIL) would hit the market but it is for sure that it will come as a revolution in the field of computing and mobile electronic products.
