The new Macbook White Unibody – probably one of the best

Probably the best entry-level laptops Apple has created?

Almost unceremonially, Apple brought out the new unibody MacBook White last week. The new model is as glossy as the familiar 13” MacBook Pro line gets. The white case is Plastic though, but dare you say it gives a cheap feeling! It sports a 13.3” LED backlit display panel, new glass multitouch trackpad, and a built-in battery that Apple claims will take you through 7 hours of pure computing joy.

It is powered by the 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor, accompanied by a 9400M GPU, 2GB of RAM (upgradable to 4GB), 250GB hard drive and the usual standby SuperDrive.

Slashgear got their hands on a sample and they were quite impressed to say the least. With the typical Apple attitude, the MacBook has no FireWire port, no SD card slot and combines the audio in/out into a single dual-mode 3.5mm jack. Apple has also eliminated the IR port. It is as beautiful as prone to lose it. The white body is very glossy and will get dirty very easily. It also comes with a non-replaceable battery.

The body feels sleek and sturdy, despite of the plastic chassis. The keyboard looks comfortable. In a test by GeekBench, the MacBook scored 3537 overall, falling just short of what a 2.53GHz MacBook Pro and well ahead of a 2.40GHz MacBook of the same vintage.

Although the battery is non-replaceable, it should give about 7 hrs of battery life (as promised) and will last through 1000 recharges. Apple states a lasting of up to 5 years for the battery. In Gizmodo’s test the battery lasted between 4.5 – 5 hrs. The new Macbook White is a better value for your money than the cheapest Mac Pro. OK, it doesnot has the SD port and the Fireport as well, and I know they are important, but your saving $200. So it is your call, but if you want a decent entry-level machine with no fuss, look no further.
