It enables Mac users to get full A/V with just one cable
Apogee Inc., a manufacturer of audio/visual and computer related products, has recently launched a mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with USB digital audio. This new adapter will be a part of the Kanex brand which includes a full line of mini DisplayPort adapters for DVI, VGA and HDMI. The advantage of having this new adapter is that the newer MacBooks with mini DisplayPorts can now easily be connected to an HD source and have digital audio too with the use of a single cable.
Earlier versions of this adapter forced the Mac users to use multiple cables along with the adapter, such as a 3.5mm to RCA cable, in order to output audio from their MacBooks. For users who just wanted to run a slideshow without audio the earlier adapter did just fine, but, for other users it was really inconvenient to plug in two separate wires for video and audio. The new adapter from Kanex works on the principle that the USB audio is integrated into the adapter with the HDMI output to allow the audio pass through. As a matter of fact there are two USB 2.0 ports conveniently located next to the Mini DisplayPort on the MacBook which allows easy access to plug in both the cables.
The adapter supports resolutions of up to 1080p and it also supports uncompressed audio such as LPCM. This device will be available in August 2009, the price though has no yet been disclosed by the company.
