A new Sony VAIO laptop has been spotted in an FCC patent application this week that some predict might finally be Sony’s answer to the cheap PC that competes with netbooks. The new Vaio GS should be 11-incher with a diagonal 4:3 display. Other features include WiFi, Bluetooth, 3 USB ports, optional Blu-ray drive, VGA out, Ethernet and modem ports, Memory Stick slot, PC Card slot, which hopefully will be an ExpressCard. It has a hole in the backside of its chassis for quick battery swapping. And the patent says the full frame weighs only 2 lbs., perfect for a carry-on device.

As a few experts point out, this could be an updated US-bound version of the Japan-only VAIO G from 2006. Did Sony decide that the market is no more optimum for the original $2000 Vaio G price tag? Wait and see.

The price is not yet revealed.
