MSI has been shelling out portable computers like stray bullets of late. It is fast expanding both side of the product-business model, with new high-performance gaming notebooks on one side, and the much coveted wind netbook series on the other. Latest addition to the peck is the new Wind U115 hybrid, which is equipped with MSI's very own hybrid storage technology.  This technology should make the machine to be able to operate both SSD and HDD hard drive simultaneously, so that one can enjoy all the features of both the types of storage with the system.

The MSI Wind U115 Hybrid is powered by Intel's Menlow platform, and features a 10 inch screen with a 1,024 x 600 resolution. The LED backlit display helps saving energy by helping reduce the power draw. It runs on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor with Intel's US15W graphics chipset. The brain is a 1GB DD2 RAM. The storage is split between an 8GB SLC SSD and a normal 160GB hard drive, which can be easily turned off to save power.

Weighing in at around 1.0kg including the 3-cell battery, the Wind U115 also gives you the traditional netbook features, such as a 1.3-megapixel webcam, a 4-in-1 card reader and three USB ports. Connectivity is taken care of by Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. You bring it home with either the Windows XP Home edition, or a Vista Home Basic.

But after all you might ask – so what’s the big deal with the hybrid SSD-HDD switching thing? Well, the operating system is installed on the SSD drive, which helps save power as well as improving performance and speeding up boot times – as claimed by MSI. Not only that, this feature ultimately facilitates the 6-cell battery to run up to 12 hrs, which is by the way another of U115’s USP, although to be able to do that the users will have to put it under ECO mode i.e. disable the hard drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and webcam, set the speakers to 'mute' and have the power saving mode set to maximum.

The MSI Wind U115 Hybrid will be available from May at £499.
