An upgrade to the SC3 UMPC
Kohjinsha is a company that is known for designing a new range of sub notebooks, known as the UMPC (Ultra mobile PC) or Tablet PC, which offer full functionality packaged in a small form factor. In the UK the company operates under the name of Vye Computers. There is unconfirmed news that Kohjinsha is readying another Tablet PC known as the SK3, which is likely to be an upgrade to the previously launched SC3 UMPC.
The SC3 UMPC was powered by the Intel Atom processor (Silverthrone), 1GB of RAM, and 60GB of hard disk. It had a 1024x600 resolution 7-inch display with Windows Vista as the operating system. Other features on the SC3 included:
· ExpressCard/34
· Ethernet 10/100
· VGA
· Audio in/out
· Multi-format card reader
· USB 2.0
· WiFi 802.11b/g
· Webcam
· GPS and SD card slot
The weight of this device was just 798g and it had a 20Wh battery. The SK3 UMPC is believed to be an enhanced version of this device with subtle changes in the specifications and design. The SK3 weighs just 720g which is a reduction over its predecessor. This device will be based on Intel’s 1.3GHz Menlow platform and will have the same specifications as the SC3, except the fact that it will now support WiFi 802.11n also. Moreover, this device has a dual camera and it is being rumored that it will also have Windows 7 support built-in. There is also a rumor that the SK3 will have an option for SSD which will be a significant improvement over the slower HDD. According to the leaked pictures of the SK3, there is no rear battery on the device which indicates that this device will be based on the Li-Polymer battery. There is also a slight hope that Kohjinsha might have added a 30Wh battery to this unit so as to boost uptime to about 4 hours. It is expected that Kohjinsha will come out with a detailed press release later this week.
