Wistron is among the world’s largest ODM companies producing ICT products. From its headquarters in Taiwan, it has fast expanded to include operations in Asia, Europe and North America. Wistron recently showcased its N900z smartbook at the Computex trade fair being held in Taipei. It is powered by an 800MHz Freescale i.MX51 processor and has 4GB of SSD for storage. On the outside it looks a lot like the Sony Vaio P series, in the sense that it has a small form factor. Other features include:

·         10-inch display

·         2 USB ports

·         Ethernet

·         Audio in/out jack

·         Built-in 3G module, WiFi

·         Ubuntu operating system

The processor isn’t as fast as the typical Intel Atom powered netbook but it handles tasks reasonably well. According to reports from Laptop Mag who got hands on with this device, the performance was sluggish when they tried to play a video alongside two open applications, but, with the applications closed, the video played fine.

Another interesting thing about this smartbook is that it has a rubberized chiclet keyboard which according to Laptop Mag feels pretty good. The mousepad however is too small and has a single button which seems unusable. A 3-cell battery will supposedly keep this device running for up to 10 hours. Moreover the fanless operation ensures there won’t be much noise and it won’t get too heated. The release date and pricing is not yet known but Freescale expects the price to be somewhere around $200 mark.
