New Intel Consumer ULV processors

Intel introduces smaller, ultraportable Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors for budget Notebooks.

The missing link?

The missing link?

The latest Intel theory is - Netbooks are attractive, but still affordable thin notebooks with a larger screen and keyboard may be more attractive to some people. After AMD has gone the same way with its Athlon Neo processor introduced in HP’s Notebooks like the dv2, Intel plans to bring out a new Core-architecture processor for lower-cost ultra-thin laptops.

This new platform will fall somewhere between the Atom processor and ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo options. The package size of the processor should be 22 x 22 and will be found in notebooks that are less than 1 inch thick. Sources added that they are simply taking the existing ULV processors and tweaking it for the consumer segment. ULV CPUs have a TDP of under 10W, while its Atom N270, used on most Netbooks, has a TDP of 4W. The CULV processor should hit the market later this year, and will aim at the Full-sized Notebooks under $1000.

This is probably the only gap in Intel’s product line which AMD wants to exploit, and the CULV is certainly looking at filling this gap.
