NEC has announced one of the thinnest and lightest machines around.

The VersaPro

The VersaPro

Forget Asus Seashell – here comes one that is half as thick and 2/3rd of the weight of that of the Seashell. The new NEC VersaPro UltraLite Type VS netbook is only 0.62-inch thick and weighs a meager 725g. This small baby is powered by the Intel Atom Z540 processor. Now what’s the big deal with the Z540 – well big enough, as it has a much improved clock speed of 1.86GHz as compared to the usual 1.6GHz N270. Also it is supposed to improve battery life – which goes for about four hours with the default battery and up to eight hours with the extended one – as the company claims.

It is caged in a silver matte body with no track pad. Instead present a small black trackpoint that we’ve come to know and love long ago in Thinkpads. They’ve also managed to squeeze in three USB ports, Ethernet and Wi-Fi b/g.

The screen is also a bit bigger at 10.6-inch with an improved resolution of 1280 x 768. The brain boasts of a 1GB RAM. It gives you the latest SSD drive of 64GB capacity.

Another unique thing about this machine is the absence of fans. They say it’s the thickness of about 1mm to adopt the structure of the body by heat radiation which eliminates the need for cooling fans and heat sink.

The hiccup in this whole fairy-tale is that probably only Japan is getting the VersaPro when it comes out in the end of July. Also it’s expected to cost in excess of $1800. That includes Windows Vista Business though.

NEC is one of the biggest provider of IT network integrated solutions and semiconductor solutions in multiple countries.
