The butterfly

ASUS recently announced the details of its latest offering the butterfly shaped, MacBook Air like U-Series Laptops which despite of being thin and lightweight offer great functionality. The shape of the U-Series has been inspired by one of the nature’s most beautiful creation i.e. the Butterfly. Its side profile resembles the wings of a butterfly in flight. They offer the right blend for the style conscious professional.

 The U-Series and the UX-Series in all have a total of 7 models – U20A, U80V, U50G, U81A, U51Vg, UX50V and the UX30 which range from 12.1-inch to 15.6-inch screen size.

While the 12-inch U20A, 13.3-inch UX30 and 15.6-inch UX50V would be based on Intel’s latest CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) processors in order to make ultra thin designs possible for larger systems. The processors used to power these systems range from 1.2GHz Celeron M in the U20A to the 1.3GHz Pentium, 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo and 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo in the UX30 and UX50V series.  The UX30 is the thinnest and the lightest of them all measuring 0.9-inches thick across its length and weighing only 3.5 pounds. This has been made possible by leaving out the DVD burner, which is although available on other models. The other two models i.e. U20A and UX50V are not more than 1.2-inches thick at the thickest point. All versions have a LED backlit display, WiFi, Bluetooth, hard drive support of upto 500GB and support for upto 4GB of RAM. In terms of graphics processing capabilities both the U20A and the UX30 have onboard graphics provided by Intel GMA4500, whereas the UX50V has a dedicated GeForce G 105M graphics card with 512MB of video memory.

The other models under the U-series are available in 14-inch (U81A, U80V) and 15.6-inch (U50G, U51Vg) size variants and are powered by processors that start from the 2GHz Intel Pentium Dual core and scale upto the 2.66GHz Intel Core2 Duo. All the models have a LED backlit display which not only saves power but also maintains the color richness. The graphics performance on the U50G and U51Vg  is enhanced by the GeForce G 105M GPU while the U81A has a 512MB Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics chipset for better and faster 3D graphics.  For the people who do not require a dedicated graphics card the U80V uses the onboard Intel GMA4500.

The exact shipping locations and prices have not yet been disclosed by ASUS. This is the second company to launch CULV based Notebooks after Acer’s Timeline series. The ASUS U-series is meant to offer portability and performance at a very low cost comparable to budget notebooks or even netbooks.
