Dell looking into ‘smartbook’
By: Joe FreemanThe PC giant is researching possible products
Dell has announced that they will be looking into products for the new smartbook variety of laptops. Dell’s Finch said that the target market for smartbooks will be the same as the Linux based netbook. Both are designed to mainly use web-based applications, a concept leading onto although not as radical as cloud-computing.
Dell will also be looking into the possibility of offering Google’s Chrome OS on some of their laptop models. Chrome is an operating system that is designed from the ground up to use web-based tools and applications.
In related news, Dell will soon be upgrading the ageing Ubuntu 8.04 that currently comes with their Linux based netbooks to the 9.04 version. With the upgrade they will be switching to the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) edition. Ubuntu will be releasing 9.10 by the end of October.
