Honor MagicBook Art 14 laptop review - Great OLED subnotebook with vapor-chamber and innovative camera
Better than the MacBook Air?
With the new MagicBook Art 14, Honor offers a great subnotebook with a high-resolution OLED touchscreen and a Meteor Lake processor. The attachable webcam is also a real innovation that works excellently. Cooling is provided by a vapor chamber.Andreas Osthoff, 👁 Andreas Osthoff, ✓ Brian Burriston (translated by DeepL) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
With the new MagicBook Art 14, Honor is launching a very lightweight subnotebook with an Intel Meteor Lake processor (Core Ultra 7 155H) and is combined with a high-resolution OLED touchscreen that offers a frequency of 120 Hz. When it comes to the webcam, Honor is breaking new ground by using an attachable module that can simply be stowed away in the housing when not in use. This means that the edges of the screen can be extremely narrow. Our test device also offers 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD; the price was not yet available at the time of testing. A variant with 16 GB RAM & 1 TB SSD is also available.

Housing - High-quality magnesium alloy
The new MagicBook Art 14 is a very slim and, at 1.013 kg (~2.23 lb), also very light notebook. Visually, the new MagicBook Art 14 has a lot in common with the Huawei MateBook X Pro 2024 including the keyboard with speaker grilles and the shape of the touchpad. Honor offers the device in three different colors. In addition to our test device in green, the notebook is also available in white and gray. Visually, the green version makes a very classy impression and, surprisingly, the slightly velvety surfaces are not particularly susceptible to fingerprints.
Honor uses an attachable webcam (more on this in a moment), which is why the upper edge of the display is very narrow (2.2 mm/<0.1 in) and there is no annoying notch or camera bump. The screen-to-body ratio is a very good 91%. There are three small contacts for the magnetic webcam on the top edge.
We really like the stability of the metal casing (magnesium alloy). The base unit can hardly be pressed in or twisted, even with a lot of force, and there are no creaking noises. The thin screen lid is a little more flexible, but there are no problems here either. The hinges are very well adjusted and the lid hardly wobbles when the opening angle is adjusted (maximum 150 degrees). The lid can easily be opened with one hand, which is made easier by the recess on the touchpad.
Despite its 14.6-inch display, the MagicBook is very compact overall and, above all, very light at 1.013 kg (~2.23 lb). Within the comparison group, only the MateBook X Pro 2024 and the LG Gram Style 14 are slightly lighter (20-30 grams/~0.7-1.1 oz), but this is not noticeable. In terms of height, only the passively cooled MacBook Air M3 and the Galaxy Book4 Pro 14 are slightly flatter. The footprint itself is slightly larger than most competitors due to the large display.
Features - Thunderbolt 4, USB-A & HDMI
Despite the flat design, Honor not only limits itself to USB-C ports, but also has a full HDMI output and a regular USB-A port on the right-hand side. You can therefore do without adapters in everyday use. Two USB-C ports are available on the left-hand side, with the front one supporting the modern Thunderbolt 4 standard. Compared to the MateBook X Pro (only 3x USB-C), we like the connectivity of the MagicBook Art better, even if you can't charge it on both sides. An SD card reader is not available.
Communication
Honor uses the well-known AX211 WLAN module from Intel, which uses Bluetooth 5.3 in addition to 6 GHz networks. In conjunction with our reference router from Asus, the MagicBook Art 14 achieves very high and stable transfer rates. During our test, we had no problems with the signal quality or with large downloads.

Webcam
Honor has come up with something special for the webcam, because instead of building the webcam into the top edge of the screen, it is designed as an external module that can be stowed away in the housing. The compact module is the same color as the housing and, similar to microSD cards, can be pulled out of the housing by pressing on the module. This mechanism is spring-loaded and makes a solid impression. The webcam itself is magnetically attached, so it won't simply fall off.
The corresponding connectors for the webcam are on the screen lid. It sits very firmly on the lid and does not wobble around. The orientation of the webcam can also be changed. However, the quality of the webcam with the 1080p sensor itself is only average and, given the comparatively large module, we would have liked a larger sensor here. In addition, the studio effects for the webcam are not supported, which is incomprehensible to us. However, we are already in contact with the manufacturer about this.

Maintenance
The lower case cover is secured with Torx screws and is easy to remove, because unlike the MateBook X Pro there are no hidden screws under glued rubber feet. The M.2 2280 SSD is accessible next to the fans, but the RAM and WLAN module are soldered. A look at the cooling system reveals a special design. A thin vapor chamber is used here, which also houses the antennas for the WLAN connection.
Input devices - Comfortable keyboard and haptic touchpad
Despite the thin casing, the black keyboard offers a key travel of 1.5 mm and is a very good keyboard. The keystrokes and feedback are precise and even long texts can be typed without any problems. In this respect, the MagicBook has nothing to hide from expensive business laptops. The volume of the keys is unobtrusive, only the triggering of the space bar is louder. The layout is not perfect (we are not referring to the international keyboard version), as the power button (which also contains the fingerprint scanner) is integrated into the top right of the keyboard and can therefore easily be confused with the delete key. The vertical arrow keys are also very small. The white keyboard illumination offers two intensity levels and can be activated automatically via a sensor.
Just like the MateBook X Pro the new MagicBook Art 14 also offers a large haptic touchpad, so there are no moving parts. The haptic feedback is simulated by vibration motors, which is why you can click the pad at any point and get consistent feedback. The pad also supports gestures at the edges (brightness, volume), which also receive haptic feedback through the vibration. Overall, the operation is excellent.
The capacitive touchscreen is also available for inputs, which works as expected without any problems. The touch functionality can also be deactivated via the quick menu of the pre-installed PC Manager.
Display - 120 Hz OLED
Honor uses a 14.6-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 3,020 x 2,080 pixels in 3:2 format. The corners of the screen are rounded, which is why some icons are not fully displayed, but in practice there should be no limitations here. The touchscreen is very reflective and reflections can also be problematic indoors, but there is no raster effect on bright surfaces, as is the case with some OLED panels. The subjective picture quality is simply outstanding, as colors are very vibrant and the contrast ratio is extremely high thanks to the rich blacks. The 120 Hz frequency also ensures smooth movements. The brightness can be regulated automatically via a sensor, but the color temperature cannot.
In SDR mode, the OLED panel achieves an average brightness of 480 cd/m² and a maximum of 704 cd/m² in HDR mode (or 670 cd/m² with an almost completely white picture). These values are significantly lower than the MateBook X Pro 2024 (620 nits SDR, 1,200 nits HDR), but still clearly above the current OLED panels from Samsung (~400 nits SDR, ~580 nits HDR).

* ... smaller is better
Honor delivers the MagicBook Art 14 with various color profiles, which we analyzed with the professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro 2). The Native profile is active by default, but the colors are somewhat oversaturated. The P3 profile, on the other hand, displays the colors and grayscale very accurately, only the color temperature is slightly too warm. However, all deviations are already below the important limit of 3.
With our own calibration (profile is available for free download above) we can optimize the colour temperature and reduce the color deviations even further. In addition, Honor also provides an accurate sRGB mode. Overall, the panel is therefore very suitable for editing images/videos.

Screen flickering / PWM detected | 120 Hz Amplitude: 11 % | ||
The display backlight flickers at 120 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) . The frequency of 120 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8327 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
The MagicBook Art 14's display uses PWM flickering or DC dimming with a frequency of 120 Hz and a low amplitude, which should not cause any problems.
Performance - Meteor Lake with 32 GB RAM
The MagicBook Art 14 is powered exclusively by the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor in conjunction with 16 or 32 GB LPDDR5x-7467 RAM. Dedicated graphics cards are not available.
Test conditions
Somewhat surprisingly, there are no additional energy profiles available in the PC Manager. We carried out the following benchmarks and measurements with the Windows performance mode Best Performance.
Processor - Intel Core Ultra 7 155H
The processor is Intel's Meteor Lake chip Core Ultra 7 155H, which offers a total of 16 cores. In the MagicBook Art 14, the processor briefly operates at 43 watts, but then quickly drops to 28 watts. Although the slim notebook does not set any performance records, the processor performance is perfectly sufficient for most everyday tasks and, as we will see later, the rather conservative power limits also have a positive effect on the fan behavior. The Snapdragon chips in some competitor models offer better performance in native CPU benchmarks.
In battery mode, the maximum consumption drops to 40/26 watts, which is why the multi-core performance is 15% lower here. Further CPU benchmarks are available here.

Mass storage
The 1 TB version of the YMTC PC300 is installed in the test device, of which 853 GB is available after the initial start-up. However, there are still two partitions on the Honor laptop and only 235 GB are free on the system drive, which can quickly lead to capacity problems if you are not careful with installations or downloads. The remaining 618 GB are available on the D drive. The performance of the PCIe 4.0 SSD is average and is perfectly adequate for normal tasks, and the transfer rates remain stable even under prolonged load. Further SSD benchmarks can be found here.

Graphics card
The graphics calculations are performed by the well-known Intel Arc Graphics which is the fast version with 8 Xe cores and a maximum clock rate of 2,250 MHz. Due to the low power limits, the full potential of the iGPU cannot be exploited, but the performance is still good and in everyday use the iGPU copes with all tasks (including the playback of high-resolution videos) without any problems. The X1-85 GPU of the Snapdragon CPUs is slower in the synthetic tests (including native tests such as WildLife or Steel Nomad Light).
The MagicBook Art 14 can also be used for gaming and, unlike the Snapdragon laptops, there are no compatibility issues. Many older or less demanding titles also run smoothly with high details, only demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Baldur's Gate 3 require the reduction to minimum details or the use of upscaling. The GPU performance remains almost constant even during longer sessions and on battery power. Further GPU benchmarks are available in our technology section.

Emissions - vapor-chamber cooling
Noise emissions
The MagicBook Art 14 uses two fans and is a very quiet device overall. In mains operation, the fans usually remain deactivated or there is only a very quiet noise that you can barely hear. Under somewhat heavier load, it is often still less than 30 dB(A) and only when gaming or in the stress test does the cooling become more audible at 34 or 35 dB(A), but even in this case the noise is by no means disturbing. In battery mode, the device remains even quieter overall. All in all, the MagicBook benefits here from the comparatively low power limits of the processor and here it doesn't have to hide behind its Snapdragon competitors. There were no other electronic noises in our test device.

Temperature
There are no remarkable features in the temperatures overall. The surfaces remain pleasantly cool in idle mode and under low load, and we measured an average maximum of 38 °C (100.4 °F) even under high load. Although there is a hotspot on the underside with 47 °C (116.6 °F/in the central rear area), it is possible to place it on the thighs without any problems. There are also no restrictions when using the keyboard. In the stress test with combined CPU/GPU load, the performance drops again quickly and the CPU stabilizes at 22 watts.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 44.2 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 47.9 °C / 118 F, compared to the average of 39.3 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27 °C / 81 F, compared to the device average of 30.8 °C / 87 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 37.1 °C / 99 F, compared to the average of 30.8 °C / 87 F for the class Subnotebook.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 30.7 °C / 87.3 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.2 °C / 82.8 F (-2.5 °C / -4.5 F).

Power management - decent battery life
Energy consumption
Despite the high brightness and the large panel, the MagicBook Art 14 is an efficient computer. We measured a maximum of 8.9 watts in idle mode at full brightness, which is a good result. When gaming, you can expect around 40 watts and in the stress test it is 66.9 watts for a very short time, which levels off at 46 watts after a few seconds. The included 65-watt power supply is therefore sufficiently dimensioned.
The power consumption in standby mode and when switched off is not extremely high, but there is still potential for optimization here.

Battery life
The runtimes with the 60 Wh battery are good overall, but weaker than the Snapdragon competition and the MacBook Air M3. However, the results are better than the MateBook X Pro, although a larger 70 Wh battery is installed here.
In the WLAN test with 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 62% of the maximum SDR brightness in the test device) and 60 Hz, we determine a runtime of 9:36 hours or 9 hours with 120 Hz. At full brightness, the values drop to 5:52 hours (60 Hz) and 5:21 hours (120 Hz). In the video test at 150 cd/m², we recorded a very good 13:52 hours and around 6.5 hours when playing an HDR video at full brightness.
A full charge with the device switched on takes 105 minutes, whereby 80% of the battery is available again after just 69 minutes.

Pros
Cons
Conclusion - MagicBook Art 14 offers a great overall package with a clever webcam solution
The new MagicBook Art 14 made a very good impression in our test. Honor presents a very well-balanced subnotebook with a low weight, but without compromising on stability or connectivity. In addition, the attachable webcam is a clever solution that enables very thin screen edges without a notch or camera hump. The webcam module can simply be magnetically attached to the lid and the module disappears into the casing when not in use. The entire mechanism makes a very solid impression.
The Meteor Lake processor does not set any performance records, but the power limits match the cooling performance very well and the fan noise remains very low overall. There are also no temperature problems thanks to the vapor-chamber cooling. The OLED screen with 120 Hz is impressive in practically every respect, even if it is highly reflective. The picture quality is extremely good and there are accurate color profiles. The battery life is also okay, even if the MagicBook falls behind the Snapdragon competition or some other comparison devices with larger batteries.
High-quality and lightweight casing, very good input devices, an excellent OLED screen and a good balance between performance and emissions: The new Honor MagicBook Art 14 is an excellent subnotebook without any real weak points, but with a very innovative camera solution.
There are many similarities, especially visually, with the Huawei MateBook X Pro, but with which more compromises have to be made. These include, for example, the stability of the casing, the lack of HDMI/USB-A and, above all, the louder fans. The MateBook has a clear advantage in terms of display brightness, but all in all, the Honor MagicBook Art 14 is the better overall package.
Compared to the Snapdragon competition, the MagicBook only has a disadvantage in terms of battery life, but there are no problems with the compatibility of apps/games/accessories. Apple's MacBook Air remains a strong competitor with long battery life and the fast M3 processor, which can still be passively cooled. However, the 60 Hz IPS display is weaker than the 120 Hz OLED.
