70% HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ak008na review
Source: Trusted Reviews English Archive.org version
Not this specific version. The overall chassis, keyboard, screen and physical design is fine but the spec offered here is unbalanced and totally hampered by a slow hard drive. Opt for the ak113na or ak056na and you’ll have a great gaming laptop that’ll offer good all-round performance and a wealth of features. It’s certainly no gaming powerhouse but it’ll get you reliable performance in all the latest games.

Model: The HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ak008na is targeted at those looking for a single laptop to do everything from work to playing games. The chassis of the laptop is made from matte black plastic and some green highlights give the laptop a nice aesthetic look. However, the color scheme is a matter of personal taste and it may not appeal to everyone as it tends to look more on the funky side. The Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit system features a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-6700 processor (Turbo boost: up to 3.5 GHz), an Nvidia GeForce 950M graphic card, 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM and a 1 TB SATA hard disk with 5400 rpm. Other pre-installed programs are McAfee LiveSafe, HP Games by WildTangent, HP Lounge, HP 3D DriveGuard, Evernote, Netflix, Skype, Unigene Heaven benchmark and Unigine Valley benchmark.

The laptop sports a 15.6-inch anti-glare, WLED backlit IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The screen delivers good viewing angles along with vibrant colors and good contrast. Hence, images look natural. Its full-size island-style keyboard comes with a Alien Green backlight and it is sturdy, responsive and easy to type on, but there is a little bit of flex on the casing during typing. The touchpad is just average, but most of the users will usually connect an external mouse when they are gaming, as it is not ideal to play games using a touchpad. The specifications of the laptop places it in the upper mid-range category. Despite mid-range graphic card, the laptop will still deliver a comfortable gaming experience, but users may have to reduce the settings from high to medium and disable anti-aliasing in certain games.

The laptop comes with connectivity features such as Ethernet LAN, and a Miracast compatible WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0 combo module. As for interfaces and ports, the laptop has two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, an RJ-45 port, an HDMI port, a headphone/microphone audio combo jack, a multi-format SD media card reader and a SuperMulti DVD optical drive. A webcam with integrated dual array digital microphone is incorporated. The first drawback of the laptop is that the hard disk included is not exactly even close to being a fast one and the second drawback is that some users found the included RAM capacity to be too low, since certain games may require more RAM in order to run smoother. This may not apply to all users and for some, 8 GB of RAM might be more than enough. In addition, the laptop is heavy at 2.32 kg and its battery can only last up to around 6 hours of general usage according to user reports. This isn’t exactly ideal for a laptop of this size. On the bright side, one would think that the gaming laptop will be priced higher based on the specifications, but it is not. The decent, budget-priced laptop allows the user to play the latest PC gaming titles with some compromise on the display settings.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M: Mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GTX 900M series, based on the Maxwell architecture.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15.60":

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

70%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
