Google has begun rolling out a new software update to the Chromecast with Google TV streaming device. The new update brings a jump from Android 12 to Android 14 for the discontinued streaming device. The update was initially supposed to roll out last year but was delayed.
Arriving as version UTTC.241218.004, the update comes in at 809MB in size. The changelog says the update upgrades the Android TV version from 12 to 14. It also seems to add support for the Google TV Streamer's (available on Amazon for $99.98) Voice Remote which has Find My Remote and a customizable button. Other changes are a security patch update to January 2025 and general improvements and system stability.
However, you may want to hold on before installing the update as there have been a few complaints from some of those who have installed it.
One user reported that the update broke support for local media as they now get a low power warning despite being connected to a 30W power brick. Another user said USB drive detection no longer works even after several attempts of rebooting the streamer and reconnecting the drive. While this might be just a few cases, it is advised to wait a while for more feedback.
