Asus ExpertBook B1 B1400 in review: Small, light and affordable
Among Asus' ExpertBooks, the B1 series offers the most affordable models of notebooks intended for office and business tasks. In our tests, we could already take a look at the 15-inch ExpertBook B1 B1500 which offers a similar configuration as the B1 B1400. The latter is equipped in our test configuration with an Intel Core i5-1135G7, 8 GB RAM as well as a 512 GB SSD and is available for about 700 Euros (~$796). The most expensive configuration with a Core i7 processor and more RAM costs about 1,030 Euros (~$1171).

Case & features - 14-inch laptop with Thunderbolt 4
Asus manufactures the case of the ExpertBook B1 B1400 from sturdy plastic and reinforces the lid with an aluminum alloy. The build quality is high and there are no uneven gaps or the like.
The display does not flex when opening the lid and can be folded back up to 180 degrees. Both the dimensions and the weight correspond to those of other 14-inch notebooks. The weight is 1.5 kg (~3.3 lb).
The ExpertBook B1 B1400 also offers unusual ports, such as the VGA port. Since the Thunderbolt 4 port is not blocked by the power supply, numerous other interfaces can also be created with corresponding adapters.
A microSD card reader is also available. However, this only achieves a slow 25.3 MB/s when copying and 26.6 MB/s when writing data with our reference memory card Angelbird AV Pro V60.
WiFi 6 is available for wireless network connections. In combination with our reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12, the test model achieves very good transfer rates of 1,333 MBit/s when transmitting and 1,480 MBit/s when receiving data.
The webcam resolves pictures with just 0.9 MP, as is the case with many current notebooks. The image quality is correspondingly low, which displays content blurry and with pale colors even in good light conditions. A mechanical webcam shutter protects against unwanted glances.

Input devices - ExpertBook with backlit keyboard
The keyboard of the ExpertBook B1 B1400 offers a noticeable pressure point and is well suited for writing longer texts. The arrow keys are a bit small and their double assignment with the scroll keys as well as Home and End is not optimal. A number pad can be displayed in the clickpad, whereby the mouse pointer can be navigated further.
As a mouse replacement, the touchpad works very well and allows precise navigation. Inputs triggered via click as well as touch are reliably registered. The fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button also functioned reliably during our test period.
Display - Full HD in the Asus notebook
The screen of the ExpertBook B1 B1400 consists of a 14-inch IPS panel and offers a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The average brightness of around 240 cd/m² is very low, but the good black value (0.23 cd/m²) still results in a good contrast ratio of more than 1,100:1. The brightness in combination with the matte panel is therefore still sufficient for indoor use. The subjective picture quality is good and even bright surfaces do not look too grainy.
From a brightness level of 20 percent and less, we measure PWM with a frequency of 25,000 Hz. Since this value turns out very high, people with sensitive eyes should not have to expect any problems. There are also visible halos at the edges.

* ... smaller is better
Our analysis (CalMAN & X-Rite i1 Pro 2) shows a visible blue cast in combination with a too cool color temperature in the state of delivery. We get the color cast under control with our calibration, but the brightness drops a bit further to 225 cd/m² at the same time. The color representation also improves a bit, but the deviations are still too high for serious image editing, since the color space coverage is also too low (sRGB only 63%). The calibrated ICC file can be found in the upper right window next to the screen illumination graphic.
Overall, this is a very inexpensive IPS panel, but its picture quality is perfectly sufficient for normal office tasks.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 25000 Hz | ≤ 20 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 25000 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 20 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 25000 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18080 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Outdoors, the ExpertBook B1 B1400 can be used well especially on cloudy days or in the shade. However, the display brightness is not sufficient for working in direct sunlight. The IPS panel used is very viewing-angle stable.
Performance - Well suited for office work
Our test model of the Asus ExpertBook B1 B1400 is equipped with an Intel Core i5-1135G7, 8 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. For the display of image contents, the internal graphics unit Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 80EUs is responsible. As an alternative, the ExpertBook can also be equipped with the stronger Intel Core i7-1165G7 and more working memory.
Test conditions
For our test, we use the "Balanced" performance profile that can be set in the MyAsus app. A whisper and a power mode are also available as alternatives.
Processor
The test unit runs on a Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor with four cores from Intel's Tiger Lake generation and operates with clock rates between 2.4 and 4.2 GHz. Besides the cooling system, however, the set TDP also plays a role for the CPU's performance. This is generously dimensioned with a short-term value of 51 watts (PL2) and a long-term value of 28 watts (PL1).
In our Cinebench R15 endurance test, the initial value is on a high level, and even reaches that of some notebooks with an Intel Core i7-1165G7. Afterwards, however, the result drops significantly and settles at an approximately 15 percent lower rate. The results of the individual disciplines are usually a bit below average and are often only enough for the last place in our test field.
The CPU's performance drops significantly in battery mode. Only 248 instead of 860 points are achieved in the Cinebench R15 multi-core test without a connected power supply.

Graphics card
The Asus ExpertBook B1 B1400 is equipped with an Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 80EUs which is suitable for simple graphical applications. The performance also depends on the installed working memory, which is why the single-channel configuration of our test model offers a lower performance than comparable notebooks.
This is also reflected in the 3DMark as well as gaming benchmarks, where Asus' notebook ranks last in our test field. An improvement in performance can be achieved by using a second RAM module. In battery mode, the 3DMark 11 result of 4472 points is only slightly worse compared to 4684 points.
However, the iGPU is completely sufficient for office and multimedia applications (incl. playing high-resolution videos), but only low details/resolutions are usually possible when gaming. The performance of other graphics units in comparison to this can be seen in our GPU benchmark list and our GPU gaming list.

Temperature
During our demanding load test, the surfaces of the ExpertBook B1 B1400 heated up to 54.3 °C (~130 °F) at the lower left corner. However, since this scenario does not occur in everyday use, the temperatures always remain moderate and no restrictions have to be expected.
Inside Asus' laptop, temperatures briefly rose to around 89 °C (~192 °F) during the long-term stress test, then dropped to 80 °C (176 °F) and settled at around 65 °C (149 °F), which could be maintained until the end of the test. The CPU's clock rates dropped below the base clock of 2.4 GHz, but the system quickly stabilized again after the end of the test. Since this scenario should also not occur in everyday use, a limited system performance can only occur in very demanding applications.

Verdict - Mobile with Asus ExpertBook B1 B1400
In our test, the Asus ExpertBook B1 B1400 proves to be a slim and mobile notebook that is well suited for everyday tasks. Office applications run efficiently and the laptop also copes well with more demanding tasks thanks to its good performance. Thanks to the relatively good battery runtime of seven hours, you do not have to have a power outlet nearby all the time.
Even though the performance proves to be completely sufficient in everyday use, an improvement, especially in the graphics performance, can be achieved by using a second RAM module. The maintenance options also allow for an expansion of the mass memory. Compared to rivals, like the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G2, the ExpertBook B1 B1400 proves to be on par. Those who also want to work with stronger models, like the Honor MagicBook 14 or the Acer TravelMate P6, can also simply switch to the model variant with an Intel Core i7-1165G7.
The Asus ExpertBook B1 B1400 is ideally suited for mobile office work and is also extremely robust due to its sturdy case.
