In general, I don’t fully understand the company’s approach to realme 9i positioning, because less than six months have passed since the release of realme 8i. The predecessor did not have time to become obsolete, and we are offered another novelty. And a novelty that has not changed much. Judge for yourself: a different design, a different chipset, stereo speakers and fast charging appeared. But the set of cameras, for example, is the same. They probably shoot the same way. Performance is even simpler, and strange things have happened with the screen refresh rate, and now the smartphone has 90 Hz instead of 120 Hz. At least fresh versions of the software could be brought in… but no. There is a suspicion that it was created to compete with the new Xiaomi smartphones. In terms of parameters, the smartphone is really very similar to the new Redmi Note 11. However, if you abstract from this, then the budget smartphone itself turned out to be quite good. Among its main advantages, I can single out a high-quality display, a very cool autonomy paired with fast 33 W charging, as well as stereo sound.

That said, the Redmi Note 11 is priced the same, offers a lot of the same features, and if you were to split hairs, you might be tempted by the fact that it has an AMOLED screen, whereas the Realme 9i has an LCD. The older Realme 8 also has AMOLED on offer. It’s also not a 5G phone, and while you shouldn’t necessarily expect 5G support for £200, the Poco M4 Pro 5G does include this, and it’s only about £40 more, so that might sway you. These are relatively small issues, though. The Realme 9i is an excellent budget phone that will more than satisfy most buyers after a cheap ‘n cheerful device.

Realme 9 Pro Plus

The latest to join the Realme family is none other than the Realme 9 Pro Plus. As far as its design is concerned, the case is made of plastic but the glossy back is very susceptible to fingerprints. However, the stability is rather convincing as even stronger finger pressure does not get through to the screen. It is worth noting that the workmanship is also clean and without noticeable edges. There is also a 3.5 mm jack for sound output with Hi-Res certification, as is NFC, and the user can even measure their heart rate via the fingerprint sensor as a small extra. The phone is available in three colours namely Aurora Green, a dark green, Midnight Black, a velvety blue shimmering black, and Sunrise Blue, a bright blue that is the most unusual colour with a coating which fades under sunlight. In terms of its display, it is worth mentioning that the AMOLED displays are now something completely normal even in the mid-range. Having said that, the Realme 9 Pro Plus offers the typical Full HD resolution, but the brightness is more even than in the predecessor. However, those who are looking for high peak brightness will have to look at Xiaomi or Samsung as the screen in the Realme phone cannot keep up to it. In return, the display accuracy of the colours is rather good and the response times are also convincing.
As for its performance, this smartphone has been equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 920. This processor is a SoC from 2020, but with quite high performance. In terms of its camera, the Sony IMX776 with optical image stabilization serves as the main sensor of the mid-range phone. It has a resolution of 50 megapixels but the effective resolution is reduced to 12 megapixels via pixel binning, which creates larger and thus more light-sensitive pixels on the sensor. While the overall image sharpness is in the average range, the brightening and colour reproduction are good. With low light and high contrasts, the smartphone manages to produce warm, sometimes quite detailed pictures. Apart from that, the wide-angle camera with 8 megapixels is on the usual level. While a lot is lost when it gets a bit more into detail, the pictures are good for overview shots. In addition, Realme has also installed its own macro lens with a meager 2 megapixels, which takes decent close-ups. As for the front, there is also a selfie camera with 16 megapixels. However, it is worth noting that the pictures could be a bit brighter and show more details in dark areas. Overall, it is a great device to be explored, depending on the need and preference of the user.

We loved the OnePlus Nord 2, and our only real gripe with it was that mediocre battery life. With the 9 Pro+, Realme gives us a very similar phone, but improves upon the battery life thanks to a more efficient chipset. You still get a glass back and front, flagship imaging and reliably good performance, not to mention very fast charging. The Realme 9 Pro+ also edges ahead of the Nord 2 by packing double the storage. In the UK, it’s available in a 256GB version, and costs £50 less than the Nord 2. This makes the phone excellent value. As for other competition, much of it comes from the Realme camp – the cheaper Realme GT2 Master Edition packs a much more powerful processor but a worse camera. Finally, Xiaomi’s budget brands, Poco and Redmi offer viable alternatives, with the Poco F3 out-classing the 9 Pro’s power and screen quality, and the Redmi Note 11 Pro costing less. Despite all these alternatives though, we’d pick the Realme 9 Pro+ over most of the competition given its excellent camera and ample storage

I thoroughly enjoy using the Realme 9 Pro+, and while I don’t know if I would use it as my daily driver, it’s definitely a contender. Considering that I’m someone who primarily uses flagship phones, it means a lot to me that a phone stood out to this extent. One can only hope that Realme continues to impact the market in different ways, and hopefully, we’ll see the company enter the U.S. market.

Its crisp and rich display and stereo speakers will make binge-watchers happy, while games run well enough on the phone if you do not mind graphics settings a notch below the best. The Realme 9 Pro+ is an example of a phone that needs a second and harder look to really appreciate its value. At first glance, this model seems like a bland handset that relies on a visual gimmick to get noticed, and some people might, unfortunately, stop at that. It would be a shame, though, since the phone really does have more to offer. It might not be the fastest kid on the block, but its camera chops will definitely leave a lot of owners satisfied. It delivers a solid set of features, especially when it comes to the display and sounds, and packs battery life that won't leave you too worried. Sure, Realme could have slapped on a microSD card for good measure or pushed the refresh rate up to 120Hz. But with a starting price of around $240, it's actually not that bad overall.

I think the Realme 9 Pro Plus is an out-and-out phone meant for photography enthusiasts. Although I do not mean to say this phone will not suit other needs, such as gaming, this phone has everything the shutterbug in you needs from a high-end phone without paying that price. The 50-megapixel camera can click amazing photos, while extra frills such as street mode give you features to experiment with. The optical image stabilisation is what creators will love, while the fast processor will make sure editing is a smooth sail. Those who are not into photography much but want a phone that is fairly good in all aspects will also like the 9 Pro Plus. Its crisp and rich display and stereo speakers will make binge-watchers happy, while games run well enough on the phone if you do not mind graphics settings a notch below the best. In my opinion, gamers can look for a better option, such as the Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge, but for everyone else, the Realme 9 Pro does bring a lot to the table. And the fact that it brings all that for Rs 24,999 makes it an appealing choice.

The night photography performance is splendid and even in daylight, it is going to make a lot of you happy. Obviously, Realme can still tune it better to get the colour science livelier, and maybe make the ultra-wide photos as well as selfies look more natural. Nonetheless, this is easily the best camera phone we have seen at this price in a long time! Move beyond the cameras and the Realme 9 Pro+ is a capable mid range phone. It runs fast and smooth, has a good battery life, a decent display, and fast enough charging. However, Realme UI 3.0 is full of bloatware and adware, which is something it needs to pay attention to. Xiaomi’s older MIUI 12.5 and MIUI 13 are a lot cleaner, and better organised in comparison. And, when compared to the competition, the Realme 9 Pro+ isn’t an easy pick. The Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge has its blisteringly fast 120W charging tech that alters the way you use a phone.

The current price tag puts the Realme 9 Pro into an awkward position and it's really hard to recommend over the majority of the mid-€300 handsets. It's hard to beat brighter OLED panels and upper mid-range chipsets with an LCD and typical mid-range SoC. It even faces competition from one of its own siblings. It would have been an easier recommendation if the device's screen was OLED even if that would have cost it a few hertzes. After all, the advertised granular control over the HRR doesn't seem to work, and the Auto refresh rate mode likes sitting at 90Hz most of the time anyway. But perhaps the hardware shortage is beginning to take its tow and Realme's uptick in prices for Europe this year is temporary. As time goes by, the 9 Pro may become a more lucrative option but for the time being, we see it performing well only in India.

After all, the advertised granular control over the HRR doesn't seem to work, and the Auto refresh rate mode likes sitting at 90Hz most of the time anyway. But perhaps the hardware shortage is beginning to take its tow and Realme's uptick in prices for Europe this year is temporary. As time goes by, the 9 Pro may become a more lucrative option but for the time being, we see it performing well only in India.

The realme 9 4G fits perfectly into the series and is not much inferior to the more advanced Pro versions. It has the same quality Super AMOLED with a 90Hz refresh rate as the realme 9 Pro+. A good main camera that can compete with the 9 Pro. In addition, it boasts excellent battery life. But the performance of the smartphone is average for its class, and this is probably its main drawback. There is also no stereo sound and very limited video recording capabilities.

Arguably, the Realme 9 is one of the sensible options in the family as it runs overall balanced hardware while being one of the cheapest of the bunch. It's only about €20 more expensive than the Realme 9 5G and 9 Pro. Its bright OLED panel, long battery life and somewhat decent camera performance, thanks to the 108MP main sensor, make a pretty strong case. However, the lack of NFC, 5G connectivity and the underpowered Snapdragon 680 will most likely steer away some potential buyers, and the competition can accommodate those needs while matching the Realme 9 4G's feature set and adding a set of stereo speakers as well as some sort of ingress protection.

The Realme 9 is one of the latest to arrive, and it offers some appealing features for the very reasonable price of £249 in the UK. It's interesting to compare the phone we're reviewing here directly with the Realme 9 5G – which, as the name suggests, adds 5G. The standard Realme 9 sticks with 4G, although it does have a faster wired charging rate and an OLED rather than an LCD screen. It seems that Realme is trying to cover as many bases as possible. Even just within the current Realme range, the Realme 9 risks getting lost in the noise, and that's before you've weighed it against other smartphones around this price point, like the Oppo A74 5G and the Samsung Galaxy A33 5G. It's a tough section of the market to carve out space in and you could argue that the Realme 9 doesn't quite do enough.

The Realme 9 is a good £249 phone that’s held back from real greatness by a lack of 5G, mediocre performance, and fairly weak low light camera capability. What makes the phone good? Its screen is pretty much best in class for a compact, low-cost phone. The under-display fingerprint scanner is responsive, and it’s loaded with storage and RAM. The main camera is also great when lighting is on its side. It also adds some standout style choices – you can be the judge of whether they’re good or bad – and excellent battery life to the mix. Movie watchers, file hoarders, and anyone after good battery life or a standout screen can confidently pick one up. The Realme 9 definitely isn’t for gamers or low light photographers. Maybe. Compared to its 5G sibling, the Realme 9 4G adds a nice OLED panel, an in-display fingerprint reader, Android 12, and a faster 33W charger. These are some solid reasons to get the 4G model, especially considering it costs just ₹500 (~$7) more and 5G connectivity is nowhere near fruition in India. However, all the other aspects of the phone are holding it back. The lack of a stereo speaker pair already puts it behind the competition, and Realme’s decision to use a middling processor (when its own 9 Pro uses a beefier chip for the same price) doesn’t seem right. While giving buyers a lot of options makes sense, Realme has to draw the line somewhere. In the current state, there are multiple phones from the company in the sub-₹20,000 segment, and the Realme 9 4G is probably the most confused of them all. It’s neither fully meant for entertainment (without stereo speakers) nor is it good for gaming (thanks to the processor), and above all, the low-light camera performance is among the weakest on any phone of this price.

70% Realme 9 4G review: a reasonably good choice in the affordable segment

I really think that the Realme 9 would have made more sense if the 5G version’s Dimensity 810 SoC could have made its way to the former and removed the need for the latter entirely. Everything that the Realme 9 5G lacks is fulfilled by the regular Realme 9’s specs. There is a much better camera involved, an AMOLED panel that has a jittery 90Hz refresh rate but much better colour reproduction. The charging speeds are faster and authentication is done with a trusty in-display fingerprint sensor. Even on the software side, the Realme 9 comes with Android 12 out of the box while the 5G model is still on the previous version. If only the Realme 9’s performance was better, the device would have been surely a top recommendation in my book. Users looking for a good gaming experience on a budget can certainly do with better devices in the same price range like the Samsung Galaxy F23 (review) or the iQOO Z6 (review). That said, the new Realme 9 does come across as a compelling option that gets a lot of things right.

In a nutshell, the Realme 9i 5G is a no-frills, affordable 5G smartphone that should meet most users' requirements in this range. It also gets nine 5G band support, which is pretty good when we look at the immediate competition. Its cameras were surprisingly good, but apart from that, don't expect anything extraordinary. Realme could've used an AMOLED display instead of an IPS screen, which would make the display experience a lot more vivid. I don't have any complaints about the design, as the company is known to go for a flashy look, therefore, to each his own. Let me get this straight, the Realme 9i 5G does not bring a lot of improvements or upgrades over the non-5G version. Realme is just putting its bet on the design factor, which is not the preference of everyone. The performance is decent paired with the 90Hz display. The battery backup is good which adds to the overall user experience. However, Realme has cut many corners just to make an affordable 5G phone. I cannot overlook the slow charging speeds, the lack of AMOLED display and underwhelming camera performance. Honestly, I wouldn’t say that the Realme 9i 5G is the best deal under 15K. There are many more options that you can consider in this price range like the POCO M4 Pro 5G.

Qualcomm Adreno 610: Integrated (in the Snapdragon 665) graphics card based on the Adreno 600 architecture. The performance of the GPU is between the Adreno 510 and 512/612 and therefore in the lower mid range. Supports DirectX11_1, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0, OpenGL ES 3.2.

Qualcomm Adreno 619: Integrated (in the Snapdragon 750G) graphics card based on the Adreno 600 architecture. The performance is a lot better than the old Adreno 612.
