Xteink S4: Pocket e-reader debuts with Android 11, 4.3-inch display and 32GB

Xteink, the Chinese startup behind the ultra-thin X4, has followed up with the S4, a 4.3-inch pocket e-reader that marks a notable shift in the brand's approach. Rather than continuing with its proprietary Linux-based firmware, the S4 runs on an open Android 11 platform, allowing users to sideload apps such as Kindle, Kobo and KOReader instead of being locked into a closed reading environment.

On the hardware side, the device reportedly comes with a 220 PPI E Ink touchscreen measuring just 6.98mm thick and weighing 95 grams, alongside 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It retains the usual physical side page-turn buttons, adds a single front home button, and includes backplate magnets for MagSafe compatibility.

Two upgrades stand out as corrections to earlier shortcomings: an adjustable front light with cool and warm tones, and a considerably larger 1,400mAh battery. Wireless connectivity is provided via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while a USB-C port handles charging and data transfer.

Despite the polish, the S4's rollout remains limited: it is currently sold only in China for the equivalent of around $50 (it is unclear whether this is promotional pricing; the official, retail price is likely to be higher). There is currently no confirmed timeline for an international release beyond a general expectation that one will follow, leaving prospective overseas buyers with more questions than answers for now.
