The Xiaomi Mi 9, like the Mi 8 before it, has a variant in which the rear panel appears to be see-through, showing the internals of the phone. Although this effect is not in fact genuine, it is cosmetically appealing, often comes with additional spec bumps, and has thus proved very popular with fans of this device series. Its maker had organized a sales event for this SKU, as well as for the Mi 9 SE, in China for today (March 14, 2019).
The event, which was to take place via Xiaomi's own commerce channel, may have been anticipated with some hype, as it is only the second time the Transparent Edition flagship has been available for purchase. Therefore, it may have been particularly disappointing for Xiaomi fans when the OEM pulled the plug on it at the last minute.
The company admitted that it probably did not have enough units to cover the orders it had projected would have been made today. These supply issues have reportedly been plaguing Xiaomi at the top ends of its product lines for some time. Therefore, the sale of the units that are on hand has been postponed until March 19.
