MWC 2023 | Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition revealed in surprise announcement
The Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition has been unveiled in a surprise announcement from the brand at MWC. Thanks to electrochromic lenses that can turn black, you can switch between immersed and transparent modes without needing a physical lens cover. The latter setting enables you to blur the lines between reality and VR.
The Xiaomi AR Glass has a micro OLED display with FHD resolution and up to 1,200 nits brightness. The cordless glasses provide greater freedom of movement than competitor products such as the Nreal Air, and you can pair the gadget to your smartphone with a single tap. A report from XDA Developers, which claims to be the only media outlet to have seen in person and tested the prototype, suggests there are three front-facing cameras. With accurate spatial detection, these cameras are used for Xiaomi AI Gesture Control. The tool lets you place, move and resize virtual objects in your space, controlling content with finger-scrolling gestures. You can also grab video from a connected TV and drag it to your glasses display or turn off a smart light with a pinch movement.
The AR glasses supposedly weigh 126 g (~4.4 oz); Xiaomi has used carbon fiber and magnesium alloy materials to reduce the weight and a lighter silicon-oxygen anode battery. The gadget is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 chip with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Reports claim the device has 50 ms latency but lasts less than 30 minutes on a single charge. The Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition is still in the prototype stage, with an unknown release date and price.
