Meta has not released many VR headsets in the last few years, with the Quest 2 serving as the company's sole current-generation option until the Quest Pro arrived last autumn. The pair exist at entirely different price points though, with the Quest Pro costing 5x as much as the Quest 2 originally did and 3x more than its peak US$499 pricing. According to The Verge, Meta plans to change its approach in the next few years, with yearly product releases, starting with the Quest 3.
As we have discussed separately, the Quest 3 will not help the price gap from the original Quest 2. Instead, Meta is expected to pitch the Quest 3 as a more expensive option, with the third-generation headset likely bridging the gap between the Quest 2 and Quest Pro. However, another VR headset codenamed 'Ventura' could serve as a truer Quest 2 replacement with an 'accessible' price tag.
While its price and features are unknown at this stage, The Verge quotes Mark Rabkin, Vice President of VR at Meta, as having explained to Meta employees that:
The goal for this headset [Ventura] is very simple: pack the biggest punch we can at the most attractive price point in the VR consumer market.
The website adds that Ventura is pitched for a 2024 release, albeit without sharing any specifics. In comparison, Meta will wait until after it ships Ventura before introducing 'La Jolla', the codename for a VR headset that will offer 'photorealistic, codec avatars'. Seemingly, La Jolla will serve as a Quest Pro successor, with the former bringing across 'a lot of the comfort things' already available in the latter. La Jolla's focus will be on higher resolution displays though, with Meta wanting to 'really nail work, text and things like that'. A release date has not leaked yet, although it seems that La Jolla will not be ready until 2025 at the earliest.
