Reviews for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9
On paper, the Redmi Note 9 is a slightly improved version of its Redmi 9 sibling. However, these small improvements in the spec sheet manifest in noticeable differences in everyday operation. Find out below how the Xiaomi smartphone fares in our test.

Coming in just under R4k, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 left me impressed. Unlike newer phones from Huawei, you here have a full Android experience with all the Google Apps working perfectly. The phone might be a bit sticky when it comes to performance, but for the most part the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 comes highly recommended.

There is a lot to like about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, and for savvy smartphone users on the look out for a great value for money device, it ticks the necessary boxes - big, bright display, large all-day battery and great all-around camera performance. The only fault we can find is the bloatware, but at R3 999 for the phone, it is not a dealbreaker in the slightest.

With the Redmi Note 9, Xiaomi zeroes in on battery life and photography as its twin priorities, resulting in a budget phone that occasionally punches above its weight. Performance and design compromises mean that it’s not an outright winner, but showing strength in a number of areas where the Moto G8 fails makes it a viable alternative.

The Redmi Note 9 is not the best value-for-money smartphone you get in the budget and midrange segments. Its base model, priced Rs 11,999, seems to be a balanced budget smartphone ticking most of the boxes right. But the phone’s top-end variant costs Rs 14,999 and seems expensive at this price point, especially when you compare it to the Poco M2 Pro and Realme 6, which offer better performance and features. Therefore, while the base variant is certainly a good bet, the top-end variants are hard to recommend.

Though it's plastic it is well designed, and it comes with impressive-sounding features such as a quad-lens camera that performed mostly well in our tests, save for lacking some finer detail.

In the end, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 does live up to its roots, but not up to my expectations nor to what Note owners have come to expect from this device. It still needs a lot more love (spit and polish) from the brand when it comes to software optimisation and gaming performance. Hopefully, these should be resolved with future updates (MIUI 12), but for now, they aren’t. If you have last year’s Redmi Note 8, there’s no good reason to upgrade. I would recommend the Note 9 only if all you care about is getting the best possible hardware at Rs 11,999 (and of course don’t prioritise gaming).

The Redmi Note 9 is a good option, if not the best in the price segment it comes fighting in. The phone impresses in certain areas such as the battery life, display and even its overall performance. However, it eventually ends up proving to be the sum of its price as its cameras, and surprisingly the design let it down a little at crucial times.

By now we know that the Redmi Note 9 has an impressive battery backup and a large display with an average processor and an average camera. The base model of the phone packs 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage and is priced at Rs 11,999. If you are looking for a phone that caters to your daily phone usage (video streaming, social media scrolling and the basic voice calling) without compromising on the battery life, Redmi Note 9 is a to-go device. Having said that the phone’s biggest competitor will be the newly launched Poco M2 Pro which offers a better Qualcomm processor, camera and other features by paying an extra Rs 2,000. Poco M2 Pro is priced at Rs 13,999 (base model). Then there are phones from other rival brands like the Realme Narzo 10 and the Samsung Galaxy M21, which too could appeal to buyers in this segment.

The Redmi Note 9 starts at Rs. 11,999 in India which is a lot higher than the Redmi Note 8 (Review), which had managed to slot in under the Rs. 10,000 mark. The recent GST hikes and the weaker Rupee are said to be the main reasons behind the higher pricing. The base variant of the Redmi Note 9 does offer decent value with its full-HD+ display, powerful MediaTek Helio G85 SoC, and 4GB of RAM. It also delivers good battery life thanks to the big 5,020mAh battery.

It may not have the sort of features that the Note 9 Pro and the Note 9 Pro Max have. But the "plain" Redmi Note 9 more than compensates with an affordable price tag and rock solid performance.

Overall user experience is great and seamless thanks to the wide variety of features it offers. On the skin, we get lots of useful and reliable features as well as customization. On the Camera, we get a versatile feature especially for filmmakers and photographers who wants flexible controls. Although it lacks optimization on stability and camera app, it still provides a bang for the buck experience because of its hardware features and designs. Imagine having a 1080p screen, with 200,000 points in antutu benchmark, with a punch-hole display, with lots of useful features, for the price of P7,990 for 3GB+64GB and P9,990 for 4GB+128GB. A quite head-turner budget-wise smartphone from Xiaomi.

Without a doubt, the Redmi Note 9 series sets the benchmark for value-for-money mid-range phones. From feature-packed specs, decent internals, very capable cameras, to cutthroat prices, it is hard to match what both the Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro have to offer.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 isn't a bad phone, it's far from it. But we find ourselves hard to recommend it because it's offered in the very same markets where the Note 9S is being sold. And the latter is hands-down, the much better version unless the lack of NFC is hard to swallow.

The Redmi Note 9 and Note 9 Pro come with quad-camera systems, almost bezel-less displays and, in contrast to Huawei, access to Google apps and the Google Play Store. They even have 3.5mm headphone jacks. As promised, the Redmi Note 9 and Note 9 Pro deliver long-lasting power, solid performance, and very good camera performance for their price category. Overall, if you want a large, well-performing Android phone that doesn't cost a ton of cash, do check these out.

You get a lot for your money from the Redmi Note 9, with impressive hardware and design, and power that leaves many rivals in the dust. The camera might be a little over sold and the software brings a lot of bloat with it, but it's a capable handset.

With an attractive physical design, above-average camera quality, and good battery life, the Redmi Note 9 is a promising entry-level device that doesn’t skimp out on performance and build quality.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
