Xiaomi Mi Mix series comeback confirmed with the supposed Mi Mix Fold or Mi Mix 4 to feature a liquid lens camera
The Mi Mix series foundered after the abortive Mi Mix Alpha, a device that Xiaomi never managed to mass-produce. Until then, Xiaomi had released new Mi Mix devices yearly, starting with the eponymous Mi Mix in 2016. The Mi Mix series was so popular that Xiaomi even released the Mi Mix 2s six months after the Mi Mix 2.
The dormant period for the Mi Mix series is over though, as Xiaomi has now confirmed that a new device will debut on March 29. Presumably, the first Mi Mix device in two years will debut during Xiaomi's March 29 hardware event, which already contains the Mi 11 Pro, Mi 11 Ultra and the Mi 11 Lite series, to name just the smartphones that will be in attendance.
Currently, it is unclear what Xiaomi has planned for its next Mi Mix. There have been plenty of rumours about the next Mi Mix being a foldable smartphone, although Xiaomi is yet to confirm this. However, it has asserted that the Mi Mix series will feature a liquid lens camera, the teasers of which you can read below. Huawei is expected to bring liquid lens technology to its smartphones with the P50 series, but this year's Mi Mix will be the first device to launch with a camera of this type.
According to the teasers, Xiaomi has wrapped liquids in thin films, replacing the optical lenses found in conventional smartphone cameras. The liquid lens camera will do the job of macro and telephoto cameras, negating the need to install two dedicated lenses. Recently, the company certified a mystery smartphone with up to 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, having already certified the Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra. We should stress that Xiaomi only certified this device for sale in China, and it is yet to tease anything Mi Mix-related on its global social media channels. Hence, the next Mi Mix device may only be available in China, which would be a shame.
