The display of the Vivo Nex Ultimate covers 91% of the front. Thanks to all sorts of innovative ideas, this works even without a notch. This review will tell you, if the Chinese high-end smartphone is suitable for everyday life, or if it is just a showpiece.

The NEX is one of the most innovative phones of 2018. The software situation isn't ideal, but if you're in the market for a bezel-less phone with top-notch hardware, the NEX is one of the best devices available right now.

The Vivo Nex is a great smartphone and a gateway for us to get the perfect notch-less phone with a huge screen. It does so many things right and solves these problems in a scientifically clever way. The use of a retractable front camera, using vibrations instead of a proper earpiece, giving the users a ton of features with the help of AI, they are all really great things about the phone. The phone is beautifully designed hence a beauty and with Snapdragon 845 and 8GB RAM, it is a beast in performance. Vivo Nex is truly both a beauty and the beast.

Obviously, there is still the pop-out camera that might get damaged or stop functioning due to its mechanical nature. If so, what kind of warranty will Vivo provide? How can you make the phone waterproof with a pop-out camera? There are still some questions that need to be answered before making this feature mass-marketable. In due time we are sure to get the answers.

So, what do we think of the Vivo NEX? There’s no doubt that the phone will be remembered as a milestone. Between the unique attempt at maximising screen real estate and the under-screen fingerprint reader, the top of the line specifications, this ranks up there amongst the most feature packed and cutting edge devices available today. The lack of IP68 protection, wireless charging and NFC are a definite miss but in exchange you get a gigantic screen, battery life that lasts a solid work day and the sheer coolness factor of that pop up camera.

Vivo Nex is one bold step by the firm, which is not as popular as Samsung or Apple, in a country which also happens to be one of the top smartphone markets in the world. The brand definitely has a name and is also one of the only firms to bring innovations right at the palm of an Indian. However, users may find it slightly sceptical to spend Rs 44, 990 initially. There are a lot of pros with the Nex. It gives you a notch-less, virtually bezel-less display along with an on-screen fingerprint sensor that’s a part of innovation but can still be improved. Not to forget the cool camera pop up mechanism that may seem like a gimmick but is thankfully more than that. You get the top of the line processor, ample RAM, amazing battery life and a great Super AMOLED screen.

Vivo Nex costs close to Rs 45,000 in India. Given the kind of features it packs, the price is not surprising. The performance of the device is certainly smooth, and it ticks all the right boxes. My main issue would be the size of the device. The camera’s over-saturation of colours is another problem that needs fixing.

In an ideal world, the Vivo Nex, should have no competition. This is because it's in a league of its own. The Nex's in-display fingerprint scanner and pop-out front camera are technologies to marvel in 2018 when no-one else is doing them (at least not yet), and even though it isn't perfect, the Nex sets the stage for the future. That's saying a lot about Vivo, a company that has for long been called a cheap iPhone rip-off maker. It has come out and made something out of the ordinary for other OEMs to learn, adopt and evolve into something even more meaningful. Now, who saw that coming?

The Vivo Nex is a smartphone from the future which is gorgeous, immensely powerful, and loaded with impressive technologies. The OLED screen is superb, the rear camera is competent, and battery life is impressive. However, the software has niggles, the fingerprint scanner is unreliable, calls are hard to hear, and many flagship features such as waterproofing and wireless charging are conspicuous by their absence. In fact, these issues overshadow the phone's powerful processor.

The Vivo NEX seems to be the counterpart of the OnePlus 6 and it’s obvious that the OnePlus 6 is now facing the competition, the ZenFone 5Z is another contender that takes on the OnePlus 6. Vivo NEX is clearly ahead in terms of the features like notch-less display, elevating camera, in-display fingerprint scanner, and with its screen SoundCasting technology.

The flagship killer, OnePlus 6, offers a similar processor and RAM at a lower price (Rs 39,999), and the Asus Zenfone 5Z is even lower in price terms. And this is not to forget the big sharks in the sea, like the Samsung S9 and Google Pixel 2 which may be priced higher but have been in the market for a longer period and enjoy greater brand equity in the premium segment, and come into contention the moment budgets go up. It, however, speaks volumes that the Vivo Nex does not seem out of place in such August company, and even holds its own in the design, camera performance, general performance and battery departments. Although some will quibble about the absence of water resistance and of course, face unlock, we do not think these are deal breakers, considering what the Nex delivers. Yes, the pop-up selfie camera will get it attention, but this is a very solid performer overall.

The Vivo NEX S is a glimpse into the future of mobile tech. Its pop-up selfie camera is fun, while it's under-screen fingerprint scanner is the best implementation of the technology to date. Vivo Nex Dual Display
Like the Vivo Nex, the Vivo Nex Dual aims at a full-screen front for a phone. The first one achieved this by including a pop up mechanism for the front facing camera. On this version though, there is no front facing camera all together. Hence, the front of the phone is nothing but the main display. For a start, the Vivo Nex Dual measures in at 157.2 x 75.3 x 8.1 mm and weighs in at 199 grams. As the name suggests, it has two displays. The main display is a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED with Full HD+ resolution and interestingly, only a 84.7 % screen-to-body ratio. The second display is a 5.49 inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD resolution. The Nex Dual only comes in one color, which is the Polar Blue. There is no point to this though, there isn’t much space to be colored but the sides. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with an Adreno 630 GPU for graphics powers both displays. The Nex Dual only comes in one configuration which is 128 GB ROM with 10 GB of RAM. The internal storage cannot be expanded as there is no memory card slot. The Vivo Nex Dual comes with a triple camera setup for its imaging department. The first camera is a 12 MP with OIS, the second is a 2 MP dept sensor camera and the last one is a TOF (time of light) camera, which does pretty much the same thing as the second one. These three cameras are also used as the front facing camera because; well there are two displays. This makes for quite a good selfie camera. They also support HDR and 4k video shooting at 30 frames per second. Unlike many flagships today, the Vivo Nex Dual retains its 3.5 mm jack for audio output. For unlocking the phone, there is an under-screen finger print scanner on the front facing display. It comes with Android 9.0 pre-installed and a 3500 mAh battery to power it all. It supports fast charging via its bottom USB Type-C port. However, there is no wireless charging due to the dual display. The Vivo Nex Dual is a good attempt to the full screen design but for some reason, the full screen design doesn’t even get close to some other models with a front facing camera. It does look cleaner without a notch or a larger bezel for cameras and sensors but the chin is large enough to take away that full screen design. Also, some may find this design interesting but there is really no need for two displays on a device. The main one is good enough for videos, games and other things that one may use it for leaving no use for the second display but to take photos and selfies. Also, the entire effort for a full screen design is gone to waste because, from the other side which some can also mistake for the main display, the bezels are just too big. For those reasons, the Vivo Nex Dual may not be the best buy but as a concept and aim to go full screen, it gives a vision. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

The highlight of the Vivo NEX Dual is its two displays. In addition to the traditional screen on the front, the NEX Dual has another AMOLED panel on the back. The latter means that you can take selfies with what would typically be rear-facing cameras without the need for dedicated front-facing sensors or an intrusive notch. Read on to find out how well this concept works and how the NEX Dual compares against other flagship smartphones.

At its heart, the Vivo Nex Dual Display is a fairly silly phone. No-one really needs a second display on their phone, and as solutions to the notch problem go, it’s one of the more extreme - most people would probably be happier with a slider or a cut-out.

Of course, only vivo can really know the true purpose behind the NEX family and just why and how it came about. Seeing how the NEX S and its Dual Display sibling were in the design and development pipeline together and considering their major design differences, yet common end-goal of delivering an "all-screen" device, it seems fair to assume an experimental nature. One executed from a veritable position of power as part of the ranks of BBK electronics. Vivo isn't particularly known for playing in the flagship segment either. So the NEX is clearly something new and different.

The Vivo NEX Dual Display edition isn’t the Vivo NEX 2 we were expecting, but it is a thoughtful and creative way to avoid the notch on a smartphone. With smart implementations like mirror mode and dual screen gaming, the second display is more than just a gimmick for me. The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition definitely feels like a preview of the future. Or at least one of the many possible futures that could run alongside foldable phones. The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition definitely feels like a preview of the future. Or at least one of the many possible futures that could run alongside foldable phones. Like the ZTE nubia X, it is, so far, one of the better implementations of dual screen phones we’ve seen so far. Unlike the nubia X, the Lunar Ring gives it a nice, futuristic touch.

Of course, there's no front-facing camera -- not even a pop-up one. But you won't really need it since the rear screen means the rear cameras can double up as a selfie camera.

The vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is already up for pre-order in China and it will ship on December 29. It's priced at CNY 4,998 ($720). More countries should get it starting next year.

So is dual screen a fad or the future? The Vivo NEX Dual Display makes a strong impression as a flagship device. But there's the sense of over-engineering too: it's fingerprint on the front, face recognition on the rear, rather than a choice; only one side has Gorilla glass protection and you can throw the idea of a case out of the window too. That said, it's one impressive bit of over-engineering that gives our inner geek a warm glow.

Despite all that, the new Vivo Nex seems like a really exciting device. It’s nice to see manufacturers innovating in the space, and we’ll likely see more dual-display phones in the near future.

The Vivo NEX 3 comes with many practical new features that makes this smartphone a pleasure to work with. Unlike other brands which pushes out insensible features just for the sake of it, we can see that every feature that comes with the Vivo NEX 3 is highly usable, and can really be deemed as an improvement to previous technologies.

Vivo Nex 3 is becoming available in more and more markets. As the Chinese company continues to answer the demand of its fanbase, it’s only a matter of time until the succeeding Nex phones become a true flagship lineup. In the case of Nex 3, it feels more like a flagship smartphone than a concept. It looks great and it performs great.

If that price difference is maintained in other markets, the Vivo Nex 3 should definitely be on your list of options. It’s fast, has a beautiful display, a versatile camera, and overall it feels pretty well rounded. The software is objectively worse than on most competitors, however, and camera performance isn’t as good as it could be. It’s up to you to decide how much weight you put on these features, but the Vivo Nex 3 is a strong alternative to some better-known flagships out there.

vivo really hit it out of the park with the NEX 3. A beautiful display, powerful internals and a great set of cameras make it one of the best flagships we have reviewed so far this year. All that’s left is availability and pricing – while we don’t know when the phone will land in the Philippines, vivo has said that they’re looking at bringing over the 4G variant over to our shores this year. If vivo sticks closely to the RMB 4998 price tag that the 4G version retails for in China when they bring it to the Philippines, then they definitely have a winner in their hands.

There's not a lot to dislike about the Nex 3. Importers - especially in the US - are probably better off ditching the 5G and sticking to the regular 4G model, but beyond that this phone offers almost everything you might want from a 2019 flagship. The huge curved panel is beautiful, the battery is banging, and the internal specs rival just about any other phone on the market. The only real letdowns are the lack of waterproofing, an occasionally clunky operating system, and a camera that's good but can't quite keep up with the best out there.

There is no doubt that the Vivo NEX 3 is a true flagship phone because it has enough highlights to support it, such as the Snapdragon 855 Plus, UFS 3.0 flash memory, 64 megapixels main camera, 44W fast charge, etc., but these features are on the waterfall screen and In front of 5G, it is more like a icing on the cake. For the waterfall screen, we can not be optimistic about its development, but we must not deny, ridicule the courage of NEX 3 to try and the meaning of the screen.

The huge waterfall display - a term that we're sure will catch on, as it's likely to be a 2019-20 feature for incoming flagships - and high-resolution, well-designed triple camera system are two high of this Vivo. Not to mention the stacked innards for heaps of power and 5G connectivity. Sure, the software is a grind, and the absence of physical buttons to the side as a result of that display is weird - but, in the case of the latter, talk about futuristic, eh?

With a third model in the running, it's hard to associate the NEX lineup with a particular feature or form factor. The original NEX S brought us the first pop-up selfie design. The NEX Dual Display is yet to be matched by any of its competitors. And the NEX 3 is another innovative device in its own way.

Regardless, vivo had finally made a phone that’s at the same level as the offerings of Samsung and domestic rival Huawei. The vivo NEX 3 is chock full of awesome features and hardware that we’ve never seen before – features that will start to become standard on the next flagship refresh cycle a few months from now.

Overall, our impressions of the NEX 3 5G were good. It's got a combination of great specs and features that makes it a decent flagship even when compared to other options today. However, the issue is that it doesn't have enough oomph factor. Its pop-up camera is interesting enough but not really anything new, while the other areas of performance are not best-in-class either. This makes it hard to recommend to others over other flagships due to its current pricing except for vivo fans but it's certainly a good flagship device to consider.

The NEX 3 5G is an outstanding showcase for an all-screen phone. The waterfall display with extreme curves on either side gives you a sense of immersion that you just don't get with any other phone. Combine that with top-tier hardware, excellent battery life with 44W fast charging, and 5G connectivity, and you get a true powerhouse.

Overall, our first impression of the vivo NEX 3 5G has been quite positive. Personally, my favourite ones are the macro and ultra-wide angle as the camera software is able to retain much of the texture and colour quality. While the bokeh mode already looks quite good, we did notice some room for improvement, as the overexposure might be a tad too much but it's still a pretty good shot. We are currently reviewing the vivo NEX 3 5G so we will be taking more photos to see how much more it can go.

The vivo NEX 3 continues along the path set by the APEX concept close to two years ago. It's had plenty of time to evolve, and this third generation is now a mature smartphone where the minimal bezels are no longer the defining feature. Minimal they still are, and the all-screen front that wraps around the sides makes for one of the best looking designs you can buy.
