Not long after becoming the first browser on Android Automotive, Vivaldi now hits the Astro Slide 5G phone, a device inspired by old-school handhelds like the Nokia Communicator. The device created by UK-based Planet Computers ships with Vivaldi and is currently on display at CES 2022 in Las Vegas.

At the end of December 2021, Vivaldi teamed up with Swedish premium electric car company Polestar and became the first browser available for Android Automotive OS. Now, this excellent piece of code takes another step forward by arriving on the Astro Slide 5G phone/handheld. This device that ships with Vivaldi preinstalled is now on display at CES 2022 in Las Vegas.

With a design that surely brings back pleasant memories to those who used handhelds like the Nokia Communicator more than two decades ago, the MediaTek Dimensity 800-powered Astro Slide can be used as a phone in portrait mode, touchscreen-only, and also as a mini laptop. In both cases, Vivaldi has all the browsing needs of the user covered.

"Many of you think surfing on your mobile phone is often anything but efficient. We believe the opposite. Vivaldi has different ways to browse that make browsing flexible and fun. Like Planet Computers, we want people to accomplish their tasks efficiently, without hardware and software limitations, which is why Vivaldi’s browser is an ideal match for Astro Slide," thinks Vivaldi CEO, Jon von Tetzchner.

The best part about the Vivaldi-Astro Slide 5G combo is that those who love the hardware/software combination but are not Google fans (at all) can run an alternative operating system. Astro Slide accepts Linux in a multi-boot setup with Android and Planet Computers, its creators, decided to use a Debian-based OS with the KDE desktop on top. Obviously, Vivaldi is no stranger to the Linux world, since it has been available for this operating system from the beginning and was also chosen as the default browser on the Manjaro Cinnamon edition distro back in early September 2021.

Although it was supposed to arrive in March 2021, the Astro Slide 5G is now set to begin shipping this month, and those interested can grab it off Indiegogo with a nice discount of 30 percent (the discounted price is now about US$650).
