Versatile Toyota electric pickup previewed as Land Cruiser lookalike to challenge overpriced Cybertruck and F-150 Lightning
In markets like Australia and South Africa, Toyota's ultra-durable Land Cruiser has long been available as an equally-durable pickup truck, becoming a popular option alongside the Toyota Hilux as a rural workhorse. Toyota's IMV 0 concept takes the styling of the recently-refreshed Land Cruiser SUV, combines it with the hard-working nature of the Hilux and Land Cruiser pickups, and dials it all up to 11 to spit out at least seven different concept designs.
The production IMV 0 appears to be intended for sale as a barebones chassis-cab pickup, with various rear and bed options available to buyers as bolt-on conversions. For the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, Toyota shared several renderings of IMV 0 applications, including a rugged off-roader with an extended cab, seemingly with a bench seat for extra passengers, as well as an offroad camper, a Red Cross ambulance, and what appears to be a workhorse with drop-side bed.
While the production version of the IMV 0 will reportedly launch in 2024 with its eyes set on affordability and emerging markets — that means it will likely be cheaper than the Hilux — it's unclear when exactly Toyota will launch the IMV 0 with an electric drivetrain. Although reports claim it will be offered in diesel, petrol, hybrid, and electric forms. Toyota is actively testing and showing off an electric Hilux concept in Australia and Asia, so perhaps that electric drivetrain that is already in development will make its way to the IMV 0, too.
An affordable electric pickup truck would be a welcome addition to a world full of US$50,000 Tesla Cybertrucks and Ford F-150 Lightnings.
