The Switch 2 has only been on the market for just under two weeks and is already sold out at many retailers, with the company having announced that it is the fastest-selling Nintendo console ever. The Switch 2 community has also been equally quick in determining which Switch 1 games run better on the successor. Or even worse. Or not at all.
Switch 2 backwards compatibility helping to revive Switch 1 games
Many Switch 1 owners haven't used their old Switch in a long time. When it became clear that many of the old Switch 1 games would also run on the new Switch 2, it raised hopes of being able to relive favorite games on larger displays, at higher resolutions and at improved frame rates. Nintendo itself provides free updates or paid updates for selected titles, such as The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom, Kirby and the Enchanted Land or Super Mario Jamboree.
Backwards compatibility is now also the subject of a Reddit thread dedicated solely to Switch 1 games and their performance, optimizations or deterioration. Anyone who has tested old Switch games on the Switch 2 can chime in here and describe their impressions of how they run. The creator of the thread, wtfimdoingwithmylife, promises to keep updating the list, making it a good alternative from the point of view of real gamers. There are also compatibility lists from Nintendo itself:
- Games that, according to Nintendo, do not run on the Switch 2 or only run with the old Joy-Cons
- Games that prevent game progress on the Switch 2 or have start up issues
- Games that have problems on the Switch 2 that have been fixed or will be fixed in the future
The new community list on Reddit rounds off these lists very well.
