The popular PS2 emulator for Android NetherSX2 has received a major update. Dubbed version 2.0, it introduces performance and compatibility improvements. There's a revamped on-screen control scheme as well.

There hasn't been much progress in PS2 emulation on Android ever since AetherSX2 ceased development, but with the release of the NetherSX2 version 2.0, things have taken a turn. This major update for the PlayStation 2 emulator brings multiple improvements.

One of the main highlights is performance. With an updated conversion script for GameDB, the new version of NetherSX2 promises better stability in many games. This change also enhances the compatibility of the PS2 emulator, but a couple of PlayStation 2 titles may still not run as smoothly as expected on old Mali devices relying on the Vulkan renderer.

In addition, the build 4248 of NetherSX2 introduces some appearance changes. For example, the touch control scheme of the PlayStation 2 emulator has been revamped (Razer Kishi V2 curr. $49.99 on Amazon). There are additional buttons that include four handy customizable macros keys.

Regarding the NetherSX2 Classic, which is based on an old yet more stable version of AetherSX2, it has also been updated to version 2.0. This variant is known to run better on older devices, and its new update brings the same set of performance and compatibility improvements.

However, it's worth noting that the two variants of the PS2 emulator can't be installed at the same time. The save states from the two aren't compatible with each other as well. Usually, it's best to start with the standard variant and then switch to the Classic if there are issues with the former.

As for where to download the latest version 2.0 of NetherSX2, both the updated standard and Classic variants are available on their respective GitHub repositories. For those installing the PS2 emulator for the first time, it's worth noting that the app requires users to use legally acquired ROMs and BIOS.
