There are a vast number of budget smartwatches on the market right now. As with many compact electronic devices, these wearables are typically not very repairable, meaning that even minor defects or a significant battery degradation may render them completely unusable. In contrast, the UNA Watch promises not only repairability but also upgradability with its modular design.
Instead of relying on interchangeable modules on the watch strap for its modularity, the UNA Watch provides users with simple access to its internals. Once the watch case is opened by undoing four screws, users will find various modules that are secured with screws rather than adhesives. These include a main module, a display, a battery, and modules for wireless communication and health metrics monitoring. However, the modular system consolidates individual functions into one unit. For example, in lieu of a dedicated processor module, the UNA core module contains both the processor and a haptic feedback system, whilst the UNA link 2 consists of a GNSS chip and an accelerometer.
According to official specs, the UNA Watch will feature a 1.2-inch MIP display with a resolution of 240 x 240, the ability to measure heart rate and blood oxygen saturation, 4 GB of eMMC storage, and a 280 mAh battery. Like most modern smartwatches, it can also display notifications and be used for controlling audio playback. The UNA Watch is priced at $335, but those who reserve a unit now can still receive a preorder discount.
