UGREEN's new accessory is designed to connect to MacBooks, Dell XPS- or Lenovo ThinkPad X1-series ultrabooks via USB type-C to expand this port with others such as HDMI and type-A, as with many of its predecessors. However, this one sheds the curved colored plastic builds of some of its forebears for a new design reminiscent of an Ethernet splitter with vents.
There is a good reason for this updated construction: this take on the UGREEN multi-port hub has its own dedicated DisplayLink chipset, which controls the accessory's HDMI and DisplayPort functions. Therefore, it needs a passive cooling system, although its new external display features might make that extra bulk worthwhile.
1 of these ports each is paired in "Display 1" and "Display 2" groups side-by-side on the Docking Station, so that a user can connect dual 4K/60Hz screens via either interface for "multi-mode" outputs. Accordingly, a user can "extend" a connected PC's task beyond the contents of its display, simply mirror it onto both monitors, or use a combination of these options.
Accordingly, a user could edit a video on one monitor with its full-screen playback on another. UGREEN notes that these DisplayLink functions are compatible with Windows and macOS, as is the gigabit Ethernet port also controlled by the dock's inbuilt chip.
The new 9-in-1 USB-C Docking Station also boasts a 100W PD type-C power supply port, dual USB 3.2 10Gb/s type-A ports and a final type-C port of the same speed. It is now available via either ugreen.com or channels such as Amazon, priced at US$199.99.
