While an Android device won't ever replace a dedicated handheld, there are a growing number of phenomenal triple-A games available directly from Google Play at very reasonable prices, and they work great on mediocre hardware like the Pixel 10 series.

Having a handheld or gaming laptop might be the best way to play the latest games, but for those looking to game on the go without dedicated hardware, there is a growing library of amazing Triple-A games available on the Play Store, which work even on mediocre hardware like the Pixel 10 series. While the following games are all playable on a touch screen, for the best experience, it is worth investing in a controller, like the budget GameSir X5 Lite (available on Amazon).

Tomb Raider

Despite seeing yet another reboot in the form of Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst, the reboot of Tomb Raider, (initially released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013) was very well received, garnering solid scores across a range of platforms. The same game was later released as Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on Xbox One, PS4 and PC (among others), which upped the graphical fidelity but kept the game largely the same.

Now, thanks to Feral Interactive, (the same company that brought Grid Legends, Alien Isolation and Hitman Absolution to mobile) have released Tomb Raider for mobile. The game remains unchanged from the original version, but now supports touch screens as well as controllers.

Even on mediocre hardware like the Pixel 10 series, the game runs extremely well. With the "graphics" option enabled (as opposed to "performance" or "battery saver"), the game plays at a solid 30 FPS according to the in-game benchmark, with 40-plus FPS in performance mode.

While the graphics might not be up to par with modern triple-A titles on PS5 or PC, the game remains very playable today, with solid combat, likable characters, and a decent story.

Tomb Raider is available for Android, priced at $19.99

Red Dead Redemption

It took 14 years for Red Dead Redemption to come to PC, launching in October of 2024, but only took another year to be made available on Android. Unfortunately, it is the only game in this list that can't be purchased directly from the Play Store. While it can be downloaded, a Netflix subscription is required to actually play the game. If you don't already have a Netflix subscription, the basic tier of $7.99 a month is well worth the price of entry for a game that received such phenomenal reviews. Especially when the PC version on Steam still costs $49.99.

For those unfamiliar, Red Dead Redemption is the western equivalent of Grand Theft Auto. Set in 1911, the game follows former outlaw John Marston, who is coerced by federal agents into hunting down his former gang members to save his kidnapped family.

The graphics are still Xbox 360 era, and there are no graphical enhancements with the Android port. The game recommends a Snapdragon 888 equivalent or higher, but it works great on the Pixel 10 series without needing to reduce the resolution scale.

Red Dead Redemption and its sequel are phenomenal games on any system, and having the first available on Android (even with a Netflix subscription) is the icing on the cake.

Subnautica

Subnautica offers 30 plus hours of underwater survival on your Android device

Subnautica was released in 2014 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It was widely regarded as one of the best survival games of all time. Set on a lonely planet after your ship crash-lands, you are tasked with exploring a gorgeous underwater world while crafting items, building bases, and managing oxygen and resources in a bid to survive and escape.

Subnautica does not give you much in terms of what to do or when, relying more on exploration and player choice to guide what to do next. However, there is a great sci-fi story to uncover and a range of terrifying enemies to do battle with.

Performance on Android is excellent, even on the mid-tier Pixel 10 series, with the resolution and detail set to high. The open and unguided nature of the game may not be to everyone's tastes, but if it is, you can expect to get at least 30 hours of content to complete the main quests, and far longer for those looking to explore every detail of the gorgeously rendered world.

Subnautica is available on Android, priced at $9.99

Wrap Up

Although older, these titles offer an outstanding experience on mobile, with many hours of high-quality gameplay. Thanks to Feral Interactive, you can also play Alien Isolation, Grid Autosport, and Hitman: Absolution.

Android can certainly make a compelling handheld gaming experience when paired with a controller, if dedicated hardware isn't an option, and we can only hope that developers will continue to bring top-tier games to the platform.
