ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 11 pen charging is neat, but the drawbacks are evident

After two years with the same visual design, the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 11 this year finally sports a new look with both superficial and functional changes. The latter includes a magnetic recess near the bottom front edge for stowing and charging the optional Slim Pen 2 stylus.
The main advantage to the recessed design is that when the pen is stowed, it would sit firmly and almost flush with the rest of the convertible for a cleaner aesthetic. In contrast, the pens for previous ThinkPad X1 models would be held by magnets near the edges or outer lid which wasn't always the most secure solution when traveling or moving about.
The main disadvantages with the recess approach, however, become immediately noticeable. Firstly, the charging recess on the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 11 is only compatible with the Slim Pen 2 and so the Yoga Pen that ships with ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 will not work. Lenovo arguably has one too many pen models and the addition of yet another specialized pen for specific models can make replacements or compatibility a headache.
Secondly, the Slim Pen 2 is thinner than the older Yoga Pen which helps it fit flush in its recess at the cost of a potentially poorer grip. Users with larger hands who may prefer thicker pens over thinner ones may find the Slim Pen 2 less comfortable to use. The Microsoft Surface Pen, for example, is larger in diameter for an easier grip.
It's not a deal breaker by any means, but picky users who rely on styluses may want to try out the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 11 first before committing.
