PlusUs is a start-up that claims to have developed an extremely slim version of the induction coil needed for wireless charging. It has apparently been integrated into the Xpad, which PlusUp characterizes as the world's thinnest wireless charging pad. This product has been released onto Indiegogo as a campaign reward. It aims to raise US$20,000 in order to product these reportedly ultra-thin wireless charging products to market.
According to PlusUs, the Xpad measures only 2.2 millimeters (mm) in depth. This, apparently, makes it 75% thinner than the average wireless charging pad. It is made of the main pad on which a device is placed, made flexible with an internal layer of cork. This pad is connected to a puck with a USB type C port, and which also contains an intelligent chip to control charging in terms of voltage required and safety around potentially damaging objects (e.g. metallic objects too near the coil).
PlusUs claims that the Xpad can charge at either 5, 7.5 or 10 watts and is Qi charging-compatible. It can also apparently use any USB power brick and cable, USB Power Delivery- (USB-PD) capable ones included. The Xpad will be finished in cork, genuine timber veneer or genuine Italian leather. Currently, it is offered at US$32-55, depending on material or reward category selected, via Indiegogo. At the time of writing, it has raised approximately US$7000 on this platform from 46 backers. Therefore, if you'd like to hazard support for this campaign in return for a potentially ultra-thin, flexible wireless charging pad, now is as good a time as any.
