Recent market research indicates that the gaming headset industry is booming in the US. The amount of retail sales of these products in the country have reportedly broken their pre-existing record, which was set in April 2018.
The corresponding figures for the same period of 2020 have in fact doubled these earlier gains (which was also a significant increase). They were also approximately 3 times greater than those for April 2019.
This April 2018 headset success story was associated with "the onset of Fortnite mania", whereas the same for 2020 is likely to be linked to the Covid-19 pandemic and its concomitant uptick in demand for in-place pursuits.
This new report, published by the analyst group NPD, was commissioned by the brand Turtle Beach, which was found to make 80% of the top 10 products in the category for the market in question, taking up 7 of those highest rankings in the process.
NPD also found that the Stealth 600 set raked in the most revenue among gaming headsets sold in the US for 2020 so far. Similarly, the cost-effective Recon 70 was associated with the most US shipments for this year (correct at time of writing).
Turtle Beach's chief executive officer (CEO), Juergen Stark, was quoted as believing that, in addition to their more obvious use-case, "distance learning and work-from-home" contributed to these headsets' apparent rise in popularity.
