Motorola Edge: Can the expensive Moto impress?

The touch-sensitive edges of Motorola's Edge take some getting used to.
The Edge signifies Motorola's return into higher-priced segments of the smartphone market. However, its edgeless design turned out to be a mixed blessing...

Granted, the Motorola Edge looks fantastic with its non-existent bezels left and right of the display, its tiny chin and forehead bezels, and its front-facing camera embedded into the display. Not once did the latter bother us.

At around 600 Euros the Edge is more expensive than any other Motorola smartphone since the venerable 2016 Moto Z. At least for Central Europe, where the Moto Z2 and Z3 were never released. Another high-priced device available in Europe is the Razr, but truth be told we been waiting for a higher-priced Motorola smartphone for way too long.

The wait was worth it, though. Motorola rewarded us with a smartphone that not only looks good but is also very powerful considering its price. It might not be able to keep up with high-end devices, but it is more than fast enough for everyday needs. Battery life was fairly long, and it even continues to support sound output via 3.5-mm headphone jack.

The short list of drawbacks includes its poor and distant-sounding speakers, its dim display, and its mediocre cameras.

In addition, the touch-sensitive edges take some getting used to. Not in terms of usefulness and usability, which turned out great in case of the Motorola Edge, but rather in terms of ergonomics. You have to adjust your grip around the display in order to avoid triggering accidental touch inputs, thereby disrupting your regular input. Fortunately, the included silicone bumper helps to alleviate the situation somewhat.

All things considered the Motorola Edge is a great addition to Motorola’s mid-range smartphone line-up. Some of its highlights include fast Wi-Fi, 5G, and a particularly accurate GPS modem.
