The most significant Windows updates often wreak havoc on perfectly functioning PCs. While upgrading has benefits, the Windows 11 24H2 update is causing headaches for gamers, students, and workers. How long before 24H2 becomes mandatory?

Microsoft regularly adds features to its OS, but not all are welcomed with open arms. The Windows 11 24H2 update began installing on PCs last October, introducing a host of new features. Some of the key additions include WiFi 7 support and a more flexible Copilot interface. Despite a cascade of issues, Microsoft will soon force most customers to take the plunge and comply with the 24H2 rollout.

Since its October debut, the 24H2 Windows update has caused Microsoft to troubleshoot on the fly. One of the most high-profile cases results from changes in how the OS handles Auto HDR. The enhancement allows older titles to benefit from more vivid imagery on HDR displays. However, it has repeatedly proven problematic, especially since the latest Windows update. Ubisoft Assassin's Creed titles would frequently freeze, crash, or exhibit strange colors. Last week, the publisher released a patch to correct the issues but did not address Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

The Windows 11 24H2 update also disables compatibility with some peripherals. Microsoft announced in December 2023 that it would drop support for the relatively short-lived Windows Mixed Reality platform. With the latest OS revision, WMR headsets no longer function at all. Disappearing mouse pointers and time zone glitches have caused other users to avoid 24H2.

Without intervening, anyone using Windows 22H2 or 23H2 Pro or Home will see it automatically applied. Exceptions include PCs managed by organizations, like companies and schools. Other individuals can delay 24H2 for up to five weeks by pausing updates in Windows settings. Still, for better or worse, all PCs will eventually be granted the latest Windows features.
