Better gaming performance in Windows 11 24H2: Microsoft AI Super Resolution competes with DLSS and FSR
While Nvidia DLSS is only compatible with Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics cards, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS also allow third-party GPUs to improve the frame rate of a game by rendering a game at a lower resolution and then intelligently scaling it to the native resolution of the monitor. However, all this requires that the respective game supports upscaling technology, while AMD RSR works with any game, but is only available with Radeon GPUs and does not quite achieve the level of AI-based solutions.
With Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft is set to introduce a system-wide upscaling feature, as Windows Insider @PhantomOfEarth discovered in the latest beta version and independently verified by The Verge. It is not yet known whether the feature is only available in conjunction with special hardware. In any case, "Automatic Super Resolution" can be activated in the system settings, either system-wide or just for individual games, which is practical if the feature leads to display problems with individual titles.
Microsoft is also working on finally integrating color management into Windows 11's system settings, making it possible to configure color profiles for sRGB and DCI-P3 and automatically switch between them, depending on the application. For example, HDR can be easily activated when the Netflix app or a supported game is opened, but deactivated again when Office apps are used in order to reduce brightness differences on OLED monitors while working.
Version 24H2 will have an AI "Super Resolution" feature, as previous reports mentioned. Here are some settings for it in Graphics settings - a default toggle and per-app options. (26052) pic.twitter.com/fI9t4ksTWH
