Microsoft Windows 11 24H2 now available with multiple AI features and more
As previously announced, the infamous Windows Recall feature is coming back, but not for everyone (more about this, a bit later). Obviously, it doesn't come in a small update, but as part of Windows 24H2, also known as Windows 11 2024. This update for home users also marks the arrival of Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. While Windows 24H2 gets two years of support, its sibling aimed at business customers gets five years (the IoT version receives a decade).
Without further ado, these are the highlights of Windows 11 24H2/Windows 11 2024:
- Common features: Wi-Fi 7 support, enhanced energy-saving capabilities, HDR background support, Sudo for Windows, higher voice clarity, overhauled Wi-Fi privacy controls, several minor tweaks and improvements to both the Settings area and File Explorer.
- Copilot+ PC-exclusive AI features: Click to Do, Live Captions, Search improvements (including offline native language support), generative fill and erase (Paint), and super resolution photos. For the last two, app updates via Microsoft Store are required.
In addition to the above, it should be mentioned that the Recall feature is coming back, but in stages. Windows Insiders on Snapdragon devices will gain access to this infamous feature later this month, while those using Intel and AMD platforms will have to wait until November. The arrival of this feature to a broader audience will be announced in the coming months.
Although it was unleashed yesterday, the latest feature update for Windows 11 will take a while to reach all eligible devices. According to Microsoft, we are talking about
"a phased rollout that will begin over the coming weeks, starting with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2 that have the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” set to On." If the update is available for your device, it will download and install automatically."
Additionally, those in a hurry can try to create installation media using the Media Creation Tool or employ the Windows 11 installation assistant to get the update faster.
Those looking for a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ laptop can now grab the 15-inch Microsoft Surface (2024) with the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite and 16 GB/1 TB memory/storage from Amazon for $1,583.95 (7% discount, $1,699.99 list price).
