Meta has not given up on its smartwatch ambitions and if the latest report is accurate, the wearable could be unveiled at the next Meta Connect event. The smartwatch is expected to come with a couple of cameras and the standard smartwatch feature set.

Meta (formerly Facebook) has had a smartwatch in the pipeline for at least four years at this point. There seem to have been a lot of hurdles as the smartwatch was cancelled and revived several times. This time, however, the project might actually see the light of day and the smartwatch could be revealed in September, if everything goes according to plan, that is.

While the name for this Meta smartwatch is unclear at this point, a report from DigiTimes Asia suggests that development may be moving forward. It is said that Meta has partnered with Huaqin, a Chinese original design manufacturer (ODM) that has worked with Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei for smartwatches and smartphones in the past. This partnership is expected to make the Meta smartwatch a reality.

As for the reveal timeline, the report adds that it could be unveiled at the Meta Connect event in September. The two-day event is scheduled from the 17th and will showcase the latest innovations in AI, wearables, metaverse technologies, and more.

Not a lot is known about the Meta smartwatch. It is expected to come with a couple of cameras, health tracking and fitness features, as well as messaging capabilities. Leaks have also suggested that it will not run Wear OS, but a custom version of Android. That being said, Meta is also working on a wristband/ bracelet that will allow users to control a computer using gestures. It uses surface electromyography (sEMG), which analyses electrical signals generated by muscle movement and sense intended actions.

It is unclear at what stage of development this wristband is in so it’s hard to say if it will make an appearance at the Meta Connect event. It is also unclear if this tech will show up in the Meta smartwatch as well, though it seems unlikely.
