TCL creates TCLtvPlus streaming shows for HDTVs using generative AI while seeking branded content revenue

TCL has created shows for its TCLtvPlus streaming service using generative artificial intelligence. TCLtvPlus streams free content to TCL TV owners supported by advertisements much like Samsung TV Plus, but will now add original shows that utilize AI to create various aspects such as animated characters.

China-based TCL has become the world’s second largest manufacturer of TV sets. The company holds a market share of 12.5 percent by shipping over 25 million sets versus Samsung holding the top market share of 30.1 percent. Many large TV manufacturers can make money selling advertisements for their streaming platforms, even more than selling the sets, so the large number of TCL TV owners across the world is a lucrative market for TCL. The goal of TCL is to create a branded and original content revenue stream.

Chief content officer Chris Regina countered fears of AI within Hollywood by saying, “We’re using writers. We’re using actors and animators.” Additional movies and shows that do not use AI are also planned. Regina was a former director of original drama at Netflix and senior VP of original co-production at NBCUniversal.

For its premiere romance, Next Stop Paris, TCLtvPlus Studio will use a combination of AI animation coupled with motion and audio capture of human actors to produce the summer special. AI technologies still cannot replace humans nor create a feature-length movie with the quality and visuals expected by audiences, however future innovations will allow streaming companies to produce fully AI-generated content.
