Steam charts No. 1: Russian Half-Life 2 trash parody debuts with 94% positive reviews

Kayf-Life: Complete Edition takes the campaign of Half-Life 2 and its episodes, throws out the serious sci-fi story and turns the whole thing into a bizarre Russian trash parody – and so far, it is going down very well on Steam. The mod, released on September 3, already has more than 150 reviews, 94% of which are positive, and currently sits at No. 1 in Steam's “Trending Free” charts. The mod itself is completely free to play, but requires the base game, which is available on Steam for around $10.

Kayf-Life is not actually a new mod, having been around since 2006. Over the years, the Half-Life 2 parody has been reworked several times – including a Reloaded version in 2011 and a remake in 2017. According to the developers, the Complete Edition now available on Steam bundles the main game, Page One and Page Two, bringing the nearly 20-year-old mod to Steam for the first time in its most comprehensive version yet.

Georgy instead of Gordon: Half-Life 2 meets Russian trash humor

Instead of Gordon Freeman, Kayf-Life stars Georgy “Zhora” Freedman. On the orders of a mysterious drug dealer, he is sent to Bobruisk 17 – a heavily guarded rehabilitation colony for alcoholics, drug addicts and other difficult cases. His mission is to eliminate the mad doctor and self-proclaimed dictator Fyodor Brunkov. Naturally, the supposedly simple job soon spirals completely out of control.

In terms of gameplay, the familiar Half-Life 2 formula remains intact: Players shoot, explore and occasionally mess around with the Source Engine's physics from a first-person perspective. According to the Steam description, the developers at Antinomy Collective have also overhauled the graphics and user interface, expanded the arsenal, made the balancing more challenging and added numerous new mechanics, enemy details, Easter eggs and secrets.

The deliberately chaotic Russian voice acting is modeled after amateur movie dubs from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The game is voiced exclusively in Russian, although English on-screen text and subtitles are available. Whether the mod also runs on the Steam Deck is still unknown.
